I would like to replace the power supply in my PC, but I'm having trouble finding the info that will tell me if the one I'm looking at will be a good direct replacement (I don't want to do any mods). I've replaced power supplies in the past and have had issues with things like the physical connection to the power button not matching, unit size/configuration, etc. I have a Dell XPS 8100 and the main power supply I'm looking at is this one...

Any help, suggestions or specs would be greatly appreciated.

A quick Google suggests the XPS 8100 has an ATX motherboard, so an ATX power supply should be fine. If I were in your shoes I'd buy it and it's been about six years since I was wrong about anything.

I'd consider the 750Watt an overkill, the 600Watt one would be more than enough if you'd wish to save some money too!

Seeing those specs, I think even a 500W would be enough. I'm running a GTX780 with a 600W PSU, so yeah, 750W is definitely overkill.

The thing is, I'm thinking about upgrading more than just the power supply... That's why I want to upgrade it first. I was looking at it specifically because of all the great customer reviews I've read on it. I'm also looking at this graphics card...

Or starting fresh with this computer and replacing the installed GT610 graphics card with the one I linked to above...

I don't do any serious PC gaming (I'm a console guy), but I do want to update and be able to run The Sims 4 smoothly.

My main questions are 1: Will it be a direct swap? I've had (in the past) problems with the towers having their own "custom" power button connections. 2: Would I be better off starting with the Cybertron Borg PC? Money isn't an issue (Amazon credit), but I don't want to spend more than I've already figured on.

My basic options are...

1: Keep the XPS 8100, upgrade the power, graphics and add some memory.
2: Buy the Borg, upgrade the graphics and add some memory.

Opinions?

Thanks for all the advice so far.

I would go with this card http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R7-250-2GD3-OC/dp/B00FRHII8C/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=undefined&sr=1-2&keywords=r7 250

Keep the XPS, it should be fine. I think you just don't need a new one at this moment

As for the compatibility and stuff, you should be ok with this card, its short, no extra power needed. I would need a second opinion on this one though.

It looks good, but I really want to go with a GeForce card. My Wife and I both go through our periods where we play The Sims like crazy, and most Sims games seem to have issues with Radeon cards.

Okay, here's the plan (I think). I'm going to keep the Dell XPS 8100 and install the following upgrades...

Corsair CMPSU-750TX PSU
ViewMax NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 4GB BLACK EDITION
TP-LINK TL-WDN4200 N900 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter (my current wireless card is having issues)

I'm just hoping the power supply and video card physically fit.

My only reservation is the fact that my 8100 has a clock speed of only 2.80GHz, where the Cybertron Borg runs at 3.80GHz. Is that enough of a difference to warrant buying the Borg? If it is, I'll go that way.

More opinions?

Just to update...

I purchased the GeForce GT630 Black Edition video card and the Corsair 750TX power supply. With that, the power supply was incompatible with my mother board (Damn Dell) despite a veritable plethora of connections, so I replaced the mother board. When I received the mother board (which is compatible with the Intel i7), I realized my particular CPU is (was) a short lived model (socket 1156) that was incompatible with the socket on the new mother board, so I purchased a new i7 (socket 1150) to work with my mother board. With that, I figured why not put it all in a shiny new case, so I went ahead and ordered the Cougar Challenger along with a couple of matching fans. Anyway, for the want of a new graphics card, I have basically built an entirely new computer (except for the BD/DVD & HDD). I'll post a pick when it's all together.

Dell are a pain in the ass when it comes to replacement parts.

While the boards are ATX with some even being BTX they swap the power connections on the ATX 24 pin around, they change the colors of the wires so yellow might not be +12v.

Yes, they most certainly are!
