OK I'm flat out of ideas as to whats wrong here. It all started last night I was downloading something very fast (7MB a second) then I tried to put it on my memory stick. Started off fine then about 60% done it stopped.

Then I tried unplugging it and putting in back in and that didn't work. Did a system reboot unplugging the PC so the motherboard powered down to reset USB controllers. Then more technical I used a cmd program that uninstalled USB flash drive registration keys and drives. Then I did the same manually searching for hidden hidden USB devices in device manager. Hell I even deleted INFCACHE.1.

None of this worked permanently some let me use the memory stick once then it didn't work after that. when I plug it in Windows (on windows 7 here) makes that sound but it doesn't show in my computer. Both flash drives I tried work fine (tested on PS3) also my USB ports are fine(my wifi reviver is plugged into one working fine)

So anyone have ideas as to what the heck is going on here?

Nope it was a brand new stick and it works in my PS3 and a DVD player with usb connection on it.

Its strange I just had another stick now plugged in on start up and my computer showed it but I disconnected and reconnected and I get nothing.

Plug the drive into the PC.
Then go to the CMD prompt
then use the diskpart command.
The use the List disk command.
This will bring up all the attached discs on the PC.
Type in select disk X(the disc size will be shown so you will know which drive is the one you want)
Then type in clean
This will delete the entire MBR partition layout.
Then you will need to use the create partition primary command.
Then use the following commands for either a FAT32 filesystem or NTFS
Format FS=FAT32 Quick
or
Format FS=NTFS Quick

Make sure you select the USB flash drive as this will wipe all data off the drive.

USB stick won't show up. Windows makes the noise it does when you plug something in but thats it. here is a pic of of the CMD window

Try checking the device manager.

See if it shows up(use devices by connection)

USB devices will be under
ACPI x64 based PC>Microsoft ACPI compliant system>PCI Bus.

Check all usb treed devices and see if any come up with a unknown device or USB mass storage with any errors.

You will have to install the drivers for the USB Mass Storage device for that USB disk.

I could not find that option but i have just discovered something that may help. The 2 flash drives I tried were both SanDisk models an 8GB cruzer switch and a 32GB cruzer blade. Just now I tried an old 4GB PNY stick and that works fine. So now it looks like a SanDisk driver problem maybe?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I have already uninstalled the drivers for both sticks from device manager and that didn't work.

To find the option right click computer>go to properties>device manager.

Once in device manager click view then select devices by connection.

that all looks fine to me. But now whenever I plug the drive in it also makes my tp-link wireless adapter (just above the flash drive in pic) disconnect. Do you that maybe the stick is bad after all and I should get a new one?

But then I try the other SanDisk stick that used to work fine( I filled the full 8GB many times before) and that also breaks now.

yeah I think its beyond help now. I have it working at the moment but that was only because I started the computer with it already plugged in. Once I unplug and put it back in it won't work.

Thanks for trying to help anyway much appreciated

I'm sorry but this just takes the pi**. Turns out after checking on the SanDisk forum that the cause of ALL my trouble was Samsung KIES. Stopped the tray agent and now it works fine. Sorry for all the trouble I feel a bit stupid now lol

Yeah judging by the SanDisk forum it seems a common problem. There was also a few other programs that cause trouble. The reason I over looked the software side was becuase it was a few weeks since I installed KIES and hadn't used my flash disk since then.
