Higher than 60hz refresh rates on LCD worth it?

I remember in the old days when we all had CRT displays the big thing apart resolution was to have as high refresh rate as possible because it was really relaxing to the eyes. It felt a lot more relaxing after 85hz.

When LCD came they only had 60 refresh rate until recently and now you can find higher refresh rates available. Does a higher refresh rate on a LCD monitor give a more relaxing view to the eye? The reason I ask is because I never seen up close a higher than 60hz LCD and I am wondering if it is the same case as a CRT or not worth the extra $ to get one?

I don't have any concerns about gaming with 60hz, it is good enough for me in that department.

The 60Hz standard is related to the picture generated by a TV CRT screen. it,s the "default" of any NTSC television set. Pal uses 50Hz.

Nowadays, these things kind of disappear.

a few years ago ( Three maybe), I had bought myself ( and still own ) a 40" 120 Hz LCD tv.

Since it was my first HD device, I had seen a difference between what I used to see on a Standard resolution TV and this one. Hell even the Simpsons ran smoother than I've ever seen.

Now in 2014, my eyes has no isses whatching a SDTV and a HAD TV the image blurrness is the same , now that My eyes have gotten accustomed to it. I would probably be amazed if I ever have a XDTV in the future.

Technically speaking, Grayfox is right. Computer LCD's can give a higher frame rate than 60Hz. in the video card settings this can be tweaked .

Also be aware that when 120Hz is promoted on tvs, it's not 120Hz at all. In the case of tvs it is merely software based motion interpolation, and generally looks terrible. It also has side effects including introducing latency and adding imperfections (eg. halo effect).

It's completely different for monitors.

Ye I am aware of that. Anyway higher hz monitors are really expensive at the moment, so I went with a Benq rl2455hm (claims 1ms gtg). People are very satisfied with this monitor so it was a decent choice for a very good price.

You will only true CRT motion and refresh rates on a Plasma TV, all LCD's use motion interpolation as stated and this creates the soap opera effect which is pretty annoying but it's not so noticeable on smaller screens

I remember good old times with 17" inches LCD that last generation of Viewsonic etc. they were really good for the eyes and you could work with 1280x1024 120hz or sometimes more. They had very stable image and it was relaxing to the eye. First LCD were very intense for my eyes. But the last one was a decent Samsung, I guess their technology is maturing. I would love to get a 120hz monitor but double the price is not worth it for sure! I am not even sure if it's going to provide any benefits apart from a smoother move.
