Welcome to the final running of the Historic Sportscar Racing Series for the GT2 platform. This series is in its fifth season, and has been my favourite GT2 series. The cars are incredibly competitive and we have been lucky enough to have some of the best drivers, and closest competition around. This in all probability is the last of the big GT2 series, so saddle up and hop on. After this series, I will be getting a PS2/GT3, and will be moving on.

Many drivers in the past have chosen to drive multiple cars, with multiple nicks. Feel free to do so here, but just clearly mark what your ‘alter-nick’ will be so nobody is confused.

Past Champions

Season 1 - Soccerboy - Datsun 240Z
Season 2 - Fogelhund - Lotus Europa
Season 3 - Didi - Lotus Elan
Season 4- Fogelhund - Camaro

General Guidelines and Rules

We expect everybody to race cleanly, and within regular OLR guidelines. The series, including any protests or time inquiries is being run under granturismo.com race guidelines. If you are not familiar with these, please read the OLR FAQ at granturismo.com http://forum.granturismo.com/showth...?threadid=46235

Lack of knowledge of rules is not an excuse to break them.

While this is not a dex certified series, you should be prepared to defend your times with a detailed RTI (I'll give you a format), and in extreme cases, we might require some type of save. While I would like to believe that everybody is honest, a select few have proved me wrong. I generally run most of the cars at each track that is run, and have a pretty good idea of what is possible. I would not recommend trying to pull a fast one here, you will be spotted.

There will be random requests for a detailed RTI, or dex save. The placements of these random RTI will be determined before the start of each race.

I am looking for a couple of volunteers who are PAL users, who can check DEX saves, for those who prefer DEX over RTI.

Save your runs I would highly recommend that you always save your fastest runs, so that you can provide details later on.

You must have two wheels on something paved at all times. This includes the curbs, rumbles strips and the two paved sections on the inside of the curbs at Rome Night. For the purpose of this series, if you can see more than two wheels off the track from the above replay view, the time is invalid. ANY touch of any wall, guardrail, building.. regardless of how hard will rule a time invalid.

Dex Garage with all Cars

Many thanks to JuanDon for preparation of this NTSC dex garage.

A dex garage for GT2 Historic Sportscar Racing can be downloaded from http://home.digital.net/mstasak/gt2_classics_2002.zip (zipped) or http://home.digital.net/mstasak/gt2_classics_2002.gme (if you can't use zip files).

The layout of the garage is:
#1-15 race modified, ready to go, stock settings
#16-25 weird cars (like Saxo Rally car) - can't add parts, but can use in open races.
#26-39 bare stock cars, use if you need to remove a part which can't be disabled, like engine balancing or port & polish
#40-48 ready to race modify and go, use if you don't like the color of #1-15

New entries will be accepted in this series until the end of the first race.

We bring this report to you as the cars are being loaded off their tranporters and are being prepared for technical inspection and scrutineering.

The first race of any series brings with it great expectations and anxiety, and perhaps there is even more in the air, as the participants know that this is the last season for these great cars. People are meeting in the paddock, and both old friends and newcomers greet and talk.

After more testing, and modifications, the series administration talk about the equality of the cars, and the expected close competition, we can only hope that this carries true.

Walking through the paddock, we see Didi unloading his famous 64’ Lotus Elan. This car, as sorted as any, has to be one of the favourites this year. Having been the Historics champion in Season 3, and a number of victories, the combination of car, and the great pilot are definitely one to watch. The German has been talking to a couple of his counterparts from GT.de, Ringohiro also a veteran of the Historics, and Comrade and Heckschleuder, both newcomers to the series. Ringohiro has made the switch from the Toyota 2000GT, to a Nissan Skyline, and hopes that the smooth Skyline provides him further successes. Comrade has taken on the challenge of the Lumberwagon as it was once known. The heavy Camaro was incredibly uncompetitive during the first two seasons of the Historics, until someone figured out the gearing and revs. Comrade is a competitive racer, as well as a great race admin at GT.de and we wish him well finding the power curve of the Z28. Heckschleuder will be driving the Lancia Delta Integrale, and will be charging hard.

Rolling out his reduced fleet of cars, fourgates is heard muttering something about being a bridesmaid and won’t let it happen again. Team fourgates is down to just two cars this season, with hopes that the concentration of the team can lead to that victory, as “driving four cars was worse than pulling teeth”. We expect team leader, fourgates in the smooth 240Z will be the one to watch in the team. The car has seen victory before, in the hands of legendary and now retired Soccerboy, the champion of the first season of Historics. Fourgates has updated Soccerboy’s old car, and should be pushing Didi for all he is worth. Fourgates junior driver 4G2, will be driving another Camaro Z28, and should be a fixture for podium contention on a regular basis.

FujiK is a newcomer to the Historic series, but believe me, he is not one to be taken lightly. A regular competitor at GTPlanet, and an admin of some of the best series going, I’ve been lucky enough to knock fenders with Fuji, and often come out on the losing end. Fuji is a Minnesotan, just like past champion Soccerboy (must be something in the water). Fuji will be driving a Toyota MR2 purchased from past competitor Jegato, but has been given the go ahead to make substantial power improvements. Hopefully Fuji will give you a place to race in GT2 after Fogelhund’s departure, and in the meantime should give some of the established drivers absolute fits.

Joining us for the first time, is some competitors from Japan. This is a new experience for us, and we hope that they enjoy the series as much as we have. Takata Noe will be driving a.. Bringing a full fleet of cars to the series is Team Sillytron. The concentration will be on Sillytron’s exotic Lancia Strato’s, but the team will also be having fun with a Toyota 2000GT and a Datsun 240Z.

Other Boxster’s joining us are Sean, Z_Mystic and Zee-Arr-1. At press time, Sean and Z_Mystic had not announced the car they will be driving, but we expect to here soon. Zee-Arr-1, nicknamed after a Corvette.will be driving, of all things a Corvette, the 67’ version. Good luck guys and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Newcomer incubus has joined us in a fresh new Nissan Skyline. To be honest, at press time we don’t know much about this driver or his team. We do know that he has a kickin’ stereo in that car, and blaring some loud music constantly.. you can guess for yourself what is being played.

Past and present GTF OLR officials have also joined us. Present Commission members Ferrari308 and NoQuarter, and past Moderator JuanDon. Juan is an intense competitor, and after very extensive testing, has kept his car(s) a secret. We’ll soon see him on the track, and will be back to update you on this. NoQuarter has participated in the Historics before, and decided to come back to GT2 this last time, he simply couldn’t escape the draw of his Shelby GT350. This despite being heavily involved in GT3, and the Grand Prix racing series. Ferrari308 has participated with us before in a Mini Cooper, but seemed to suffer from some engine problems, and missed finishing in a number of events. We can only hope that Team Ferrari has sorted out their reliability issues and will finish every round. This time out, you’ll see Ferrari in the ever popular ShelbyGT350, although there has been some rumours that you may see a two car team effort.

Team HareTurtle is also an experienced veteran of our series. He has wisely chosen the Mazda RX7 for team member Hare, and purchased a very quick copy from Team Ralph, the car being driven to a couple of victories by Rotorhead in Season 4. Team mate Turtle, will be driving the 1982 Corvette, its first appearance in the series. Can the turtle catch the hare?

Entering a bit later in the week was Easyed, the champion of the recent Muscle Car Series in his 67’ Corvette Stingray. Ed has been busy at a secret site doing extensive testing before announcing his teams intentions. We expect him to show at Deep Forest soon, and will have a press conference at that time to announce his car selection. Ed is incredibly quick, and also importantly for a longer series, very consistant. When you see easyed in your mirrors, flashing his highbeams, you might want to give him some room, as chances are, he’ll be coming through anyway.

Ed99, from GTPlanet has put in a tentative application to join the series, but is awaiting some importation issues in bringing his Mini Cooper S over from England. We hope that he gets these issues cleared up and can join the rest of us.

The Italian rikbehemoth has also deciding to join in the fun. For those who haven’t raced Rik before, he is another competitor who will be fighting it out for the top podium each week. Again, expect an announcement soon on the car of choice from this great driver.

Last season saw a wonderful battle of six Datsun 240Z’s, featuring VERY close racing amongst four cars. The positions were usually swapped every sector, and the final results never known until the end of the race. Two of these drivers, Brickman and Kevin D have chosen to come back with their 240’s again, and Brick may have another car prepped, but as of yet, it has not made it to the track.

Team Fogelhund has rolled out a fleet of cars from the transports. Back again is the defending series champion car, the Camaro Z28, to be driven by lead driver Fogelhund. The car has been used pretty hard the past couple of seasons, and hopefully there is some more left in the old girl. Second driver, Pumpkin Head has rolled the Season 2 champion car, the Lotus Europa out of the mothballs. Pumpkin Head is nervous about his chances at the bumpy Deep Forest, but can’t wait to get to High Speed Ring, where he thinks the car will be really strong. However, with a bit of luck, and a perfect lap, the car might just challenge at DF. Rennsport Addict couldn’t decide what to drive, and finally chose the Mini Cooper S. Early testing favoured the quicker Lancia Stratos, but the absence of another driver for the Cooper, finalized the decision. A car as classic as the Mini, just couldn’t miss out on the final race of the series. The car is incredibly fun to drive, and will surprise a few unsuspecting people at times with its handling, but it just doesn’t have the engine to compete with the faster horses here. Completing a Team Fogelhund’s roster is Green Eggs and Ham. The often forgotten member will be driving a Lancia Delta Integrale. The Integrale should challenge for some top 10 postions and perhaps a bit better at some of the tighter tracks, but the seasons schedule seems to favour those cars with a better top end.

So we have a strong field of 30ish entries at press time, and hope that a few more will join us soon. A couple of British lads we hope to see join us include VeeDub 16V, and Defender 90. VeeDub has made every Historic season since its inception, the only driver to do so. Defender90 is second to VeeDub in participation with 3 series completions. We do hope to see them, as they are part of the Historic family.

Now a bit of history on the series.

The series was born in 2000, as a result of Fogelhund’s love of the old racing cars in GT2. After racing in the first TARS (Trans-Am Racing series), run by Shentar, Fogey, had an inkling to put together some Race prepared older cars. TARS featured three classes, a modern Trans-Am, featuring Mustang GT’s, Camaros, Corvettes and such, a historic Trans-Am, featuring the Shelby GT350, the Mercury XR7… and the smaller cars, the Elan and such. All of these cars were not race prepared. Unfortunately, TARS never finished its first season as Shentar went AWOL for a time. When the planning started for the second season, Fogelhund got involved, and took over the Under 3 liter class. The cars were upgraded with full race specifications, and the first ever spot race was held. The spot race appropriately enough, was at Deep Forest, the only other time the series has raced this direction at the track. The spot race was dominated by the fabulous Frey brothers, with Carl Frey coming out on top with a Datsun 240Z. Paul Frey was second in a Mazda RX7 followed by Latebraker in a Lotus Elan. Fogelhund was a relative newcomer to OLR back then, and was about three seconds a lap off the pace. I highly doubt the winning time from that spot race would have been good enough to finish in the top 10 of this race, my how we have learned about tuning since those days.

TARS season 2 never got off the ground, as Shentar once again pulled a disappearing act, and at the last moment, Fogelhund threw in a couple of Ground pounders, the GT350, the Camaro and the 67’ Vette to round out the field. Next race we’ll tell some of the stories of the first season of the Historics, and some of the names of the competitors from back in those days.

We’ll have some spies out there over the course of the event, and will try and bring you some secret information from time to time. Ladies/Gentleman, start your engines, and let the action begin. More coming to you, after this first practise session. I expect to see lots of cars off the track at first, as people try and get acclimatized to this massively bumpy track. The track owners need to repave it soon. During the first couple of sessions, I would expect to see smooth driving cars, such as the 240Z to be leading the pace. It shouldn’t take Didi’s Elan too long to pick up the pace though, and then the trickier handling cars should become quicker later on. Hopefully the 240Z doesn’t get too far ahead early on, or we could see a repeat of the first spot race here, 240Z, RX7, Elan.

Vrroooom!!!!!
