A few years ago, I looked around the internet to investigate various games to become involved in. Of course one was Gran Turismo, which interested me due to my longstanding involvement in car and kart racing - and for the need for a game to promote eye/hand coordination.

As a former chess player, I also looked around for an abstract strategy game similar to chess, but which was easier and more sociable to play, and still satisfied the need to pleasurably stimulate the brain in the strategy and tactics areas. At the BoardGameGeek.com site, I found the game of Hive, and soon acquired a set of the attractive Bakelite pieces, and started playing.

Over the years, I've purchased at least half-a-dozen of these sets for family and friends, and a couple of months ago joined the boardspace.net site, where the game can be played online against either human opponents from around the world, or against the resident Dumbot computer player.

Much to my astonishment and pleasure, in just two months, playing about an hour a day, I've become one of the top-ranked players in the world! (I must be a fish in a small pond!)

I invite GTP folks to take a look at this game, join the boardspace.net site, and join me in learning and playing this fun game. A typical game takes about 20 minutes. To join and play is free, and you can register either as an anonymous guest or choose a nickname. You can play either in rated game rooms to work your way up the leaderboards, or in unranked game rooms for total anonymity while you learn.

Respectfully submitted,
Steve

I can imagine the pool is small, since I've never heard of it!

Sounds like a blast. I sometimes try to get into these, but I suck at strategy except when faced with very specific rulesets.

Give it a whirl, Niky!

In Hive, there are 11 pieces to play. One Queen Bee, 3 Ants, 3 Grasshoppers, 2 Spiders and 2 Beetles; each kind of bug has individual qualities. The game has about 3 basic rules. It is quite simple, and the basics can be learned in just a few minutes.

Respectfully,
Steve
