Named after the Monaro region of New South Wales, the Monaro was introduced in July 1968 as a two-door pillarless hardtop coupe available in three model levels: the basic Monaro coupe with six cylinder 161 cu in (2640cc) or optional 186 cu in (3050cc), the Monaro GTS with six cylinder 186S cu in (3050cc) or 307 cu in (5030cc) V8 and the Monaro GTS327 powered by a Chevrolet V8 producing 250bhp. The GTS versions had full instrumentation which included a tachometer mounted on the centre console.
The car made it's competition debut in the Sandown 250 mile endurance race with a victory and backed that up with Holden's first win at Bathurst in the 500 mile enduro.
The winning car was driven to victory by Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland (who only drove 1 lap) from Pole Position (2:56.7) and set a new lap record of 2:58.1

A couple of videos highlighting the road going version and the cars win in the 1968 Bathurst 500.

Keep the Australian cars coming. I love Aussie muscle
I'm glad you like them. That makes two of us. There's quite a few in the Suggestions thread & I've only been responsible for a small portion thereof.
If the rumors are true, Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) are saving the best for last.
A Commodore GTS-R powered by a 638bhp LS9 supercharged V8 borrowed from the Corvette ZR1.
It's a modern muscle car but it doesn't have the same appeal to me as these oldies do.
