This pic is of the '78 Bathurst 1000 winner.
The same crew/team in a brand new car won the '79 race by 6 laps! A record that still stands today & probably will never be beaten as this was back in the days before pace/safety cars.
What's more, The late great Peter Brock set a new lap record on the last lap as a tribute to the final Bathurst for the Torana.

Torana the great

An incredible car plus an incredible achievement. Can still hear Dad telling me all about it. Days before pace cars indeed! I think pace cars have a horrid habit of just outright ruining some races. Completely changing what may have been. I have been waiting for years to see a proper tribute to this wonderful era of Australian motorsport and if it happens this car is an essential.

as for the lap record on the last lap...most men surely would have backed off and brought the car home. Not Brock! Absolute legend.

When it comes to the Pace Car, I have two opinions.
A. They're a promotors dream. Call me a sceptic but if the leader is running away with a race, throwing a caution & bunching up the field is a great way to add some spice, especially towards the end. Whatever happened to having a local yellow flag(s) like they used to do? If a car has beached itself in a sandtrap for example, why do they insist on sending out the pace car and nullifying the whole circuit :irked:

B. They would have to be a lot safer than the old days of Bathurst where a driver could be coming around a blind corner only to find half the track taken up by a flat-tow truck taking up his desired line. Sure the drivers had warning at the preceding flag point (the white flag indicating a slow vehicle) but no way of telling if that was another competitor or what amounted to a large razor blade on wheels :scared:
