A $10 sheet of 1/2" MDF, a cheap jigsaw and a dremel tool:

Wow! Must say I was kinda skeptical seeing the first couple pics, but it came out very nice. Cant wait to see it when your done and its mounted.

Yeah, I thought it might end up ghetto at first but worth a try. If it went pear-shaped, I would have then tried modeling clay but I'm very happy with the results--looks better in person. Now I will coat the handle with rubber, mount some rotary switches and buttons and throw an adapter on there. Should end up really nice and really cheap. The "hard part" was supposed to be the handles but they were easy. I'm thinking the entire wheel will end up less than $75. I'll use the SLIEum on my android for the rev counter and mount it on the base behind the wheel--that thing works awesome and looks great and is only $4.

Need to coat the handles in rubber and add rotary switche, etc, but I thought I'd try it out to see how it feels to drive. Very happy with the vibration and tactile feel of the wooden wheel.

Since he said he used a dremel, I'm guessing he used it to grind down the wood into the shape he wanted. If that is infact what he did do, he has some serious skills!

Like someone else said, when I saw the first pics i though uh oh. I was wrong, all in all. Its the most impressive wheel I have seen. Well done sir. Mightily impressive.

Very nice work indeed.
Now just some shift lights and a lcd in the V and you have a perfect custom formula wheel ;)
Really impressive work on the wood carving. Maybe you can post some pictures of the tools you used?!

Hey Spike, just a jigsaw, a drill, and a dremel with a sanding wheel is all I used. Was easy, anyone can do it. I am no carpenter or woodworker by any means. Shaping the grip with a sanding wheel was much easier than carving wood be. I would never try to carve the handles--too difficult.

I think I wouldn't have the patience to do it and also I don't really have any carving skill.
But with the rubber coating you gave me an great idea for my own mod.
I changed the wheel on my CSR Elite and fitted the buttons external, the rubber coat will be great for the button box ;)

got some mdf left from a projector screen i did recentley , i will give this a bash aswell and post back, as the guy said its really easy to do hand grips with mdf and a dremal , everyone should have a go mdf is one of easiest man made fibreboards to use very soft thanks buddy for insperation 👍

You've given me ideas now... I should stop entering this part of the forum.

It does get time consuming and/or expensive quickly, doesn't it?

I can't believe that wheel is MDF, it looks incredible. You should see how I've liberally applied MDF to my own rig. Function over form, that's what I always say...

Superb work indeed!

I also love how you have "themed" your build with fantasy F1/Arcade machine.
My own plans go in a similar direction...
