In the 1980's Mugen, Honda's in-house tuning company was almost unheard of in the United States, but that changed in 1984 when Honda's American Specal Projects division built a racing version of the new Honda CR-X for the GT-4 Class in SCCA competition.

This team was led by Dix Erickson, Charlie Curnutt and Mugen lead engineer Takashi Uno. The car was powered by a 1.5 Inline 4 tuned by Mugen to produce 165HP paired with a 5 speed manual transmission.

In May 1985 the car won its very first race at Road Atlanta. After that, gears, exhaust systems, brakes, wheels, and suspensions were continually refined. In 1985 Doug Peterson won the National Championship in GT-4 driving the CRX and in 1986 Parker Johnstone won the National Championship in GT-4 driving the Mugen CRX.
