I will start by saying I wasnt the worlds biggest fan of Shaun Of the Dead. It was a good film, but nothing more. It was strange, it went from being a straight comedy to a very serious horror. And just didnt quite work in my opinion, it certainly didnt deserve the praise it got.
Now we have Hot Fuzz from the same people. This time there trying to make a Bad Boys style action buddy comedy. Simon Pegg is the straight laced cop moved to a town of country bumpkins & is teamed up with Nick Frosts character, the dumb lil yocal boy who wishes being a cop was more like being in Bad Boys 2 or Point Break. And that is the 1st problem, Bad Boys 2 is the definitive Action buddy comedy flick in my opinion. It has 2 of the best car chases ever, awesome gun fights & is funny as ****. This just isnt, but then it obviously cant be.
It really isnt that funny. Well thats sort of a lie, it was funny, very funny I think. But I can only recall 2 funny bits, but I know I laughed more than that. Then there is the action sequences that could have been brilliant, they have the brilliantly silly slow-mo twin gun dives, but it just doesnt work. Its main problem for me was its insistence on the PG-13 style of everything being far to close up & you just cant tell whats going on half the time. That and everyone in it seems to be a bloody terrible shot.
The action sequences may not be up to par, but the death scenes certainly are. Theyre extremely gory and way OTT, but they work so well & the cgi on them is very clever.
For those of you that care about the plot & the story, well its basic stuff just shoved into a English background. The twists are very predictable & if you have seen one of the hundreds of clips/trailers around, it will ruin a fair bit of it. I actually thought Nick Frost was better than Simon Pegg. At the beginning I actually found Peggs character a bit annoying. Frost was the loveable oaf & he was really good at it. Timothy Dalton is brilliant, so is most of the supporting cast, Bill Bailey is brilliant in his tiny role. But its full of comedy cameos that are more there just to go oh its him, there very under-written & quite pointless.
Overall I wasnt disappointed, it was what I thought, good but nothing more. The last 30 minutes are miles better than the 1st 1:30. And it does drag a fair bit.
I saw this with 2 people, one said it was excellent (male) & one said it was crap (female). I guess Im in the middle.
