How do you make cars look dirty?

Hey all,

I'm looking for a tutorial on how to make cars look dirty or that have driven for a while.

I see some awesome looking liveries like below. Can somebody explain or tell us how they made this kind of look and feel:

I'm going to take a guess on what some of the creators did. It seems like they used the standard decals that came with the game (not from Discovery). For example: on the last image, the dirt splatter on top of the H in Hyundai is one of the standard decals. I am also guessing that they used the alternate shapes/patterns. There's two versions of the shapes (which I can't recall what they're called in the game). One is just the solid color, and the other one fades. They likely used the latter and made it big enough to create a nice fade throughout the car.

As for "chipping" off the paint/decal, such as the one in the Martini 911 GT3, they likely made the base color white from the color picker, so the standard decals (likely from the patterns category) will blend in with the base color and make whatever they put on top of existing decals look chipped off.

I have tried a bit an came up with this. What do you think?

You should move the Martini logo on the side. It jars that the top half of the circle looks like it's in the wrong place because of the fact it's in the air intake.

I understand what you mean and I agree with you. But the problem is that I tried to make a replica of the Ferrari 308 GTB/MAK ter fore I had to place it there. But maybe if I make it a bit smaller it will give a better look. Or do you have a better advice?

I tried to look up to some actual images of the car, and i noticed the martini logo not matching your example (see the atachement and the source of that same image: Source: http://www.mat.fi/racing/13 the cropped image i added as attachment is featured on page 11)

You might want to use one of the camera align options before placing the decal to allow that circle to go inward to the intake. And also make sure the martini part doesnt touch the intake. there is a few centimeters above the martini logo before the intake starts.

Yes I see it now will change it! Thanx

You could try the align to camera options as @RFSnake said. There is less room on the side of the F40 for the logo than there is on the 308, so making it smaller would also help. Maybe moving it forward would also help so it's not as far into the intake.

Hey Daan, I just worked for now on the not dirty version. So I was wondering what you (and of course others) think looks best. With the Martini Logo on the side.

On the left I resized the logo, made it a bit smaller en moved it to the right

The other one I moved it a bit lower and used the extra posibility to paint on the black line to make the logo whole again. I'm very curious

I prefer the one on the right.

I just had a play around with this, but it just made all decals matt... how to you change decals to be either matt or gloss?

You can't, the setting applies to all decals sadly, that's why the cars posted above either have shiny dust or matte logos.

ahhh that's lame, but I guess that's for the same reason you can't apply special colours to decals, it's linked to how the cars are rendered?

Similar reasons I would guess. There's not infinite processing power so they've got to draw limits somewhere I suppose.

I did this a while back... not as nice as some of the other ones, but I used the splatter decals that came with the game and tried different colors.
Just gotta experiment.
