How do you overtake?

Where do you make your move in Sport mode or FIA tournament against good drivers? Recently I'm getting better, still my setup is holding me back, I can lap probably a half to a second faster than I am currently with a better setup. Nevertheless starting to find myself being in top 2-5 more often lately. I am not used to starting out in beginning so I am a bit under pressure in the beginning of the race but then my pace gets good. With the top drivers in my Dr(B), it's a bit difficult to make a move without being dirty. I play as clean as possible and usually I am fine with third or second place and rely on putting pressure. If the driver in front messes up than good for me, if not good for me too. However in close head on driving with players in front, I am not as decisive as I could be and hesitate to make a move that could land me first place.

How do you guys perform in these scenarios? When do you make your move? Or do you play it a bit safe like I do?

I always try to gain positions, I set a goal to be on the podium sometimes, other times top 5 and other top 10 and so in each race I have a goal, sometimes when I see that those ahead are very fast I set the goal of maintaining position, I do not like the idea but sometimes it is necessary.

I am very aggressive and I like to risk, but not too much, I mean, I do not improvise handling lines or different ways of taking a curve, obviously except when I have a battle, that if, when I have someone stuck behind me I defend as hell my position

Thanks for sharing, I do likewise if player in front is not in reach, I try to maintain my position and get fastest lap. If I am not gaining that means he is fastest though. For the FIA manufacturers event today, top 3 of us were all within .25 seconds or around that within each other. In beginning we very close but I screwed up and lost them for rest of race. Got my 3rd position back.

Usually if someone behind me is much faster I give him space without slowing myself down. I only block in sense of staying on inside and especially on last lap. On straight if he has more exit speed I let them pass. I'm basically trying to draw fine line between being aggressive but not to aggressive and causing wrecks. So it is an interesting learning process to say the least ...

I always try to keep it safe first. I wait for an opening rather than force one. I don't initiate a pass until I have a faster corner exit. Then when I'm not at least level with the car beside me before the next corner I'll concede and step behind again. If level or slightly ahead I'll leave room for the other car. Only if I'm clearly ahead I'll take the full racing line, however that does leave me vulnerable to dive bombing.

My 'strategy' doesn't get me on the podium, but it does keep me at max SR level with every pass one to be satisfied with. However I do also make mistakes now and then. When that happens I'll slow down to let the car I wronged pass no matter how many positions that costs me. Yet if the other car doesn't leave me any room and hits me and wrecks, then I continue.

I could do better if I were a little more aggressive and didn't leave quite so much room when going side by side in corners. Leaving one car width is enough in theory. However with lag I rather leave more room and stay safe instead of risking a bump.

It gets tricky when I'm behind a driver I don't feel worth the risk yet to overtake, but there's another driver right on my tail trying to force a pass. I don't want to brake too early to have the car behind me pull up, yet brake too late and I risk hitting the car in front. I usually stagger my position in that case, go one car width to the inside. If the driver in front brakes a little too soon, I have enough room to brake to the inside and hug the apex. If he brakes on time or too late I move back to the outside for the best line. If the person behind me tries to out brake me he'll slide past the apex and I can cross his line for a better exit. However that usually means that the car behind me will collide with the car in front of me, I guess that's a bonus... Sometimes it ends in taking the corner 3 wide like the first chicane today on daily race C. Miraculously nobody got hurt, this time.
