How do you set your gear ratios?

Interested to see how people set-up their gear ratios.

Whenever I buy a F/C tranny, I take the car to Grand Valley and run it along the straight there. The idea is to be at the red line in top at the fastest part of the straight, and this gives a good all-round set-up for most circuits except the really fast ones, such as Fuji or the 'Ring, where you need to make allowance for slipstreaming.

However some cars don't run very far into the red zone, so if this is the case you auto set the tranny to hit max speed on the straight 500rpm below the redline.

Search for the "Tranny Trick" in the GT3 Forums.
I still use that and then play with my final drive ratio based on the track.
Usually I run 4.56 for tracks with short straights, 4.11 for medium length tracks or really powerful cars, and as low as 3.36 for tracks with long straights or on top speed runs.

First I run the car with the stock settings then I play around with the individual ratios, most of the time my cars usually turn out with better top end and have a good amount of acceleration

The whole thing depends on what car I´m in and what track I´m at! I can´t say that there is a particular formula for setting gears, so I adjust them to where I am.

I do that with a twist. I'm an acceleration freak, so I kick my final ratio as high as possible. I then try to set my last gear ratio for the highest possible top speed like you do. After I find that ratio, I use as low an auto set as possible, then shorten the other individual ratios all the way.

This gives me ridiculous acceleration and great top speed, too. It's lots of fun on cars with lots of ratios like the seven speed M5 and GT-R Concept and eight speed Skyline 350GT-8.
