How does shifting / clutching work in GT5p? (G25)

Hey guys,

As a PC simracer I wonder how GT5p (and if you know, GT5) will do shifts. When driving H box cars:
- does the clutch work? (I guess it does! :))
- are you in neutral when the stick moving between the gears?
- is there an 'auto blip' on the downshifts and if so can it be disabled?
- what about 'auto lift' on the upshifts; do you have to lift to avoid revving the engine on upshifts?

When you look at my avatar and signature it might become more obvious why I'm asking! :)

Cheers
Niels

Yes, though it has a small engaging travel so without a light touch it is hard to slip the clutch for some people.

Yes

is there an 'auto blip' on the downshifts and if so can it be disabled?

When you press triangle (or G25 equivalent, top button on the shifter unit) you have control of the clutch and there is no autoblip, disable the clutch and it will be back to autoblip. Blipping on downshifts in GT5 isn't real important unless you do it to extremes (skip downshift and causing a large amount of engine dragging while entering a corner) and with ABS off it becomes a little more important. I always heel toe anyway.

- what about 'auto lift' on the upshifts; do you have to lift to avoid revving the engine on upshifts?

Originally you didn't have to lift on shifts but people abused this in time trials (Flatshifting galore) and now you must lift, though you still can shift quickly. A exception is below 20km/h you can still flat shift.

can't wait to get my hands on a g25 to try those out... must be a whole other game when you are using the G25

I wonder why PD never advertised these things... it probably took allot of work to get them just right

G25 (along with all clutch and H pattern wheels) are not official GT wheels so it wouldn't be advertised, if or should I say when a clutch/H pattern wheel becomes a official GT wheel then you will see it advertised. :)

Im really impressed with how the clutch works in GT5, I expected it to be either on or off but you can ride the clutch like real life, Also when skipping gears on the downshifts if you release the clutch to fast it will create shift lock, I got a 2nd hand G25 last week after only ever using a pad and it is brilliant, the build quality is really good,

It is a lot of fun thrashing through a full 6gear H patten and brings an extra dimension to the game, I now really cant wait to get the full game with more track and cars to master

You guys have now convinced me to go and get the G25.
... I just have to wait for the money issues comes along... and to justify having two wheels... unless i decide to sell my DFGT.

can't wait, the G25 sounds awesome !

Yeah, the G25 is real nice, it really feels like a proper car wheel.

In LFS you can really get the feeling of clutch gear changing, I haven't tested out the H shift very much in GT5P, but what I didn't like is that gear change would happen even if you stuffed up the clutch action.

No it doesn't, don't clutch properly and you're stuck in neutral. Unless of course you have it in H pattern mode but haven't enabled the clutch (triangle).

I noticed that the clutch works differently in different cars. It always has a too short travel (not like in NFS shift where it's much longer), but in slower cars like the capuccino you can slip the clutch, while in the high powered cars the clutch engages virtually instantly. Actually powerfull cars often use ceramic clutch which has similar behaviour.
The G25 is a masterpiece and though it's expensive it's worth it if only for the pedals.

Yeah I agree, its great value and while the shifter doesn't really feel that 'meaty', it does work and the wheel and pedals are sturdy. Many steps up from the Logitech pedals we used to get.

Thanks for explaining how GT5 does the clutching, thats pretty decent. :)

I have a DFP and I really hate the pedals but love the wheel. I am hoping the G25 will come down in price when the G27 is released...but probably dreamin'...:dopey:

Sell a kidney if you have to! :) The wheel is a lot smoother and less resistant to fast movement as well, compared to a DFP. Its a worthy upgrade, though on second thought, I wouldn't sell my internal organs...
