How long can it be in between "double posts"?

Twenty-four hours is the unofficial rule.

In a thread with breaking news and information of importance, it's okay to bend that rule.

It's not really okay if it's just a personal thread or something chatty...that's what the Edit button is for.

I suddenly remembered GTP's Formula 1 threads, whenever a race has started and some of us are watching. Thread gets flooded with posts whenever something big happens, like an accident. "Whoa huge crash" "Crash at Turn 6!!" "Damn, that was a big accident"

As ever, it always depends on the context. Spamming a thread with updates when you are the only one posting is most certainly frowned upon. As others have mentioned, this is particular in threads which are chatty or informal.

On the other hand if it is a popular thread with many people contributing, or at least taking an interest, a gap of 24 hours or so is a good enough duration to update a thread with something useful or substantial. An example being the two threads linked in my signature; they are picture threads which many users take an interest in viewing without necessarily contributing to them so sometimes there might be two posts in a row from me but there will always be a gap in between.

There's no point keeping a thread at the top of a subforum front page if not many people are posting in it.

Can a "member name' edited a post" Alert solve double posting?
There's no need to "solve" it. As @Jordan explained, double-posting is somewhat ineffable. At times it's useful - just look at my GT5 B-Spec guide or World Cup threads - and at times it's wasteful.

I take it its okay to do what several of us do when we start a thread, and post 2 or 3 more times to reserve spots, correct?

Yes. I agree, it looks much nicer sometimes. Rather than having one large post. 👍

Especially in race series threads and similar.

This applies to the "Guess the Gear changer" thread I was in. I posted a new image, only to have no replies for over a month. I didn't want to double post in fear of being moderated.
