Yo people, been learning to drift for the last few days now... Was fun at first but now its getting VERY boring/frustrating. I keep oversteering, I'm finding throttle control very hard to get the hang of.

How long on average does it take someone to get good at drifting? Ive had a search through this forum and read that some people have taken months... I dont think I could last another week 👎

Ps I use a DFGT wheel.

Cheers.

Mate. It is a long process to get good as they say. I've only just started getting the hang of holding drifts and i started drifting with DFGT since Feb. Just leave it a few days then start up again. Too much can get you stressed and bored with it, been there ahha.

Stick with it and you will get better. Time and patience.

I was practicing with my G27 for 3 months before I got the hang of it. I find it helpful to watch real life onboard videos and it does help to give you the idea of doing what and when. Also fast movement with the wheel isn't always the way, it is often the case that slower, smoother movements result in better drifts.

Hope some of this helps.

It took me about 2 weeks to start being able to barely control a drift. I'm still not great at it, but even now I have a few good drifts and a lot of bad ones lol There's always something new you can learn to get better. It was definitely very frustrating in the beginning, but keep practicing and once you get it down it's quite rewarding and fun!

I've been at it for 5 months now, G27. At 4 months is where I was finally able to continuously drift a whole track with good angle. All together your looking at around 3 months on and off. Like someone else said, don't over do it, take breaks, don't push it, it will come naturally to you.

This is gonna be a learning experience but is well worth it in the end. Also, drift by yourself, it helps you keep calm. Drifting with others that aren't patient, will make you push to hard and screw you up. You need to be comfortable.

Ok cheers for the info and links fellas. I had a good read, seems I'm oversteering which causes me to spin because I'm in too lower gear...

Bluntified gonna check your vids out now :)

Lets just say it takes a while. Some people learn fast, some slow. Whatever stage your at is fine. Just take your time and try not to stress. 👍

You have to take your time like people have been saying take it easy at the beginning. It took me about 3 weeks learning to drift one corner and balance the car, then maybe another two weeks to learn how to transfer one drift into another. In total it was about two months to get around a track with out going off the road, after 3 months though i felt very happy behind the wheel.

Also go check out the "Tips for wheel users" thread it is a little bit below this one or you can just click right there on the blue letters, it's the one eddy pointed out there is a ton of information and tips there for new drifters. 👍

edit: Also check out the How to drift videos in my ""Progression with the wheel on board" thread they can also be found in the Tips for wheel users thread. If you have any other questions about drifting on a wheel post them in the Tips for wheel users thread. 👍

If oversteer is your problem, start by doing very little angle and then slowly build up as you get better, that;s another way I learn't.

I remember the unofficial time to be good while using a controller was 2 months providing you practiced every night. For wheel I would imagine it would be about 5 months without let up if you just got the wheel and maybe 4 months if you've been using the when for a while. Don't look to practice, look to have fun because when your on track having a good time drifting around it takes a far shorter time to learn I found. Don't see practice as a chore, see it as a fun time to learn. After all, determination is the biggest part of learning to drift. If you wanna be good, don't let up. Thats the way you become an excellent drifter.

2-3 months to get GOOD if you practice almost every night.

However I began small tandems on my first day.

It's a long long way to get better than that, plus being consistent.

Yeah, you need patience, but it's worth it. Took me 4-5 days, 8hrs on each of those days, just to even get any resemblance of so called drifting. It was frustrating, but man I was determined. After that It was just a matter of perfecting the car setup to my liking and learning the drift lines for each track. Then you just practice, everyday if you can, and you will be a pro in no time, but dont stop there, it's one of those things that takes ages to master. But yeah took me about 2-4 months to get pretty good, depending on the track, start off on one track you find easy, get good then jump to other tracks. That's what helped me.

It took me about 2 months, while pregnant. Which got me tired and annoyed faster then average so...

Jut relax, and always keep telling yourself why youre doing it. Watch videos on youtube, etc etc :)

Hey Gonales. Could you add me? Not to be off topic.

Well I started out with a normal force feedback Logitech wheel (the cheap one with only 180 degrees of steering), and to be honest I didn't drift very well with that. When I got my G27 it took me 2 weeks to get used to having 900 degrees of steering while drifting. And my guess is that it took me about a month more or less to get as good as I think your talking about. And then of course you add knowledge and experience on every time you drift, so you improve. Of course it differs from person to person really. Just keep practicing and don't lose hope, it will come eventually. 👍

id say im a weird drifter, due to the fact that in 3 days i could do the whole if nurb. that being said it took me from dec 20 (when i got gt5) till say 3-4 months ago to get stuff on lock. heck im still learning how to be consistant with my tunes and tandeming. but in all honesty you dont get good at something just by looking at someone else and say "i can do that, here hold my beer" it takes time and effort. and if you want to speed up the process a bit just hang out with teams, i was in 3 "illegit" teams before getting into a good team and learning all my stuff and getting into teams like OHQ,Toxic dose crew, and redsuns. so to say how long it takes would be around 5-6 months meaning you are capable of doing advanced tricks and learning how to tandem at least 2-3 feet away from someone.

Actually It took me a week! But to really get it down two 1 month!

Ironically that was about the same for me on GT5. A year before I got GT5 or a PS3 I had GT4 and a PS2. I tried my best to learn to drift but I don't think I ever did properly learn. However, it developed my car handling skills. Then I got a PS3 and rented DiRT 3 thus increasing my skill even more. I finally went to a mates house with my new copy of GT5 and one guy said "do you want to drift?". I picked an M3 and I learnt I could drift as good as the other guy (though not very good. At all.) :boggled:. After a week I could drift the corners of Tsukuba and 2 months later I was far better.

Now I can also drift ok on GT4 and drift a lot better on DiRT 3 👍

It took me 2 months. I just try to find the perfect entry in every track that people drift on. Practice and keep practicing
