How long will the servers be up for GTS?

Would you buy GTS, knowing that if the servers are shutdown, you cannot play it anymore?

Gran Turismo Sport will mostly be an online game, meaning it will depend on running servers
for players to be able to play the game. But how long will the servers be running?
Gran Turismo 5 had its online services closed after 4-5 years, but you can still play it offline.
Gran Turismo 6 is still active, and after it has its online services closed you would still be able
to play it offline.
But Gran Turismo Sport is an online-purposed game, which will probably run a bit longer.
But no servers, no game.
So here's the main question:

Is it worth buying a game that cannot be played when the online services stop?

Yes, both above statements are true, but the fact is that you are buying for a service,
not a product. That service will last some time, but is it worth the price?

€60 / $60 for 4-5 years is okay with me.

How about €60/ $60 worth forever?
I would gladly buy a future GT title which would have an equal sized singleplayer if it
meant that i can play it for years and years.

I mean these online games can sort of be compared to live events.
You pay the entrance, the show starts and ends, and that is it.

I guess it all comes down to people's personal opinion.

Hell no. What if I decide after 5 years to go back and play the game I payed for? "Access denied, servers closed. Please eject disc." No thank you. At this point I don't think GT Sport is online-only anyways so hopefully the scenario above doesn't happen.

I very much dislike the idea of games as a service, so no I won't buy a game knowing that it'll effectively just be a coaster a few years down the road (and not even that if you buy digitally).

Sure you might get your money's worth (provided you can and do make the most of it while it lasts), but I think even multiplayer-oriented games should give players the tools to enjoy the game after the official servers get shut down. They should add some single player content (even if it's just some AI bots to smack around), or if they can't be bothered with that, at least allow private servers and LAN play.

Being able to revisit and play old games is important, even if the industry would rather you buy the latest and greatest... Nay, especially because the industry would rather you buy the latest and greatest.

That being said, I don't think GTS will be completely online-only, even if that's the primary focus.

On the other hand, you can look at purchasing the GTS as a support for PD making the GT7.
They need money. And people.

Regarding the thread title question.
My guess is that the servers for GT Sport will continue well beyond the release of GT7.
That's on the assumption GT7 doesn't take on the role of FIA championships.

So while GT5 servers only lasted 6 months after GT6 released, I think GT Sport is a different case.

The bigger question to my mind is how long will the GT6 servers last after the release of GT Sport?

Wasn't it 6 months for GT5 servers after 6 launched? I expect about the same for GT6.

Yep.

Tough call in my mind.
There's the added 'pressure' of the switch from PS3 to PS4.

Drop GT6 servers and kill Gran Turismo online on PS3.

So I don't know.
Personally I think that time will be pushed out this time around for that reason.
But I doubt that period will be lengthened any great extent.

There is offline mode as well. The servers will be up for at least 6more months after the release of new game. Obviously they would like people to buy and play the new improved game rather than picking up a older game for 10$. Moreover most people will move to new game anyways. No point in wasting the servers for older game I guess

True.
GT5 had a good offline mode as well though.

No doubt it's all down to economics.
These companies are there to make a profit afterall.
And as you say, pushing people towards the latest game has it's benefits.

I just tend to think with the change from PS3 to PS4, which is obviously different from the online experience with PS2 to PS3, that they may consider running GT6 servers a little longer.

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Without reading anything here, I'm just gonna say this:

All games have their servers shut down at some point. It's just how it is. You buy it to play it right then and there not several years later. By that note, GT5 did, GT6 will, and look at Flat Out 2, it had its servers up for almost ten years!

We are all aware of that, which is why the topic here isn't about that,
but is about whether the price you pay for a game is worth the time you will have to play it.
Sorry if the title was misleading.

I'm predicting four to six years depending on how many people participate in the FIA championship racing online. I can only hope it's longer than GT5's. I don't know. We'll only know when they tell us.

Only PD and/or Sony knows this.

Indeed. Seems a little early for us to start guessing.

GT5's were shut off pretty quick, quicker than 5P's if memory serves. Over in MS-land, I'm reasonably sure FM3's are still going (released 2009), and I know FM4 and the first Horizon still have online servers too.

Looking outside of the racing genre, the first LittleBigPlanet still runs online (though that might be because of the masses of shared community creations between it and its sequels), and I know I played the original Fat Princess as recently as, er, the end of 2015. :-/

Time will tell.
