Well, I just backed up my photos again which I do periodically, and decided to check the properties of my Photo folder. Currently I have 9.24gb's of data on the disk totally 6,298 pictures.

Just curious where our other members are at in terms of their digital photos.

Folder 1: 5.04GB 2215 total files
Folder 2: 4.63GB 4716 total files
Folder 3: 1.05GB 418 total files

10.72 Total GB and 7,349 total pictures that I've taken. :)

Do you backup your photos? Ever since I had a Disk Failure, I have backed up 700mb chunks periodically. These photo's are priceless you know? :)

I see we are both at about 1.47mb per photo.

I'm at work, so these numbers will be VERY low - still not bad considering.

186 pics + 281mb = 1.51mb/pic = = I win. :P

I'll check at home later, if I remember and the kids cooperate. I know I have a few CD's floating around, though and a few more I should burn.

 It's odd, I have a 5.24 MP Sony but I guess for a jpg, that's about the right file size. :-)

Oops. I just LOOKED at the files I checked the properties on - there were 2 .mov files in there. One is 16.1mb and the other is 23.2. That should drop me down a bit. *does math quick* 1.32mb/pic. :indiff:

I r smrt. :dunce:

I only have 582mbs worth of my Minolta. My old Concord has only use 428...

My whole my pictures folder is only 1.8gb

My music folder is well over 4gb, though.

Actually, I don't. I want to, though. I just need to get some blank (dual layer) DVDs.

My photography folder is 7.86 gigs with 3,000 files. Yeah you guys got me there...
My entire My Pictures folder is 17 gigs with 9,000 files.
I bet you guys got nothing on my collection of videos and music :)

I must suck...

All of my pictures combined (not just photos, pictures of cars from internet included) its only 1.11GB...

My photos only = 766MB

I dont take much photos so yeah...

My whole documents is at 47.0GB though, because I do download a lot of stuff from BitComet n LimeWire so I have lots of junk video clips around.

Erm...

 I think I need a tape drive...

Holy shoit....55.9 frekkin GB of photos!!! man...

Oh btw what is a tape drive?

A backup device that backs up on... tape :-) Comes in plenty of sizes and flavors. From slow ide attached devices that'll backup 200 megs to gargantum robotic devices holding 1000s of tapes each holding 400Gbs...

Did I read that right - tapes??? Are they the magnetic strips that I sometimes hear people talking about?

Whats the advantage of tapes though?

The amount of data you can store on them.. Each time you fill a 400Gb tape, it equals 85-90 DVDs - and they are, re-usable...

But yes, tapes indeed, like casettes ;)

Somewhere around 1500-1700 Gb (no typo)
Most pics stored on DVDs and some external hard disks. The majority is made up of scanned slides which I store as hi-res (16bits/channel) uncompressed files. Double that amount for the backups I have stored as well.
When ever I need them I compress them to jpg format.

Hmmmm, I just have 1.16GB of photos in "My Pictures" folder here (864 items), but a little of it contains silly little images that I saved off the internet, though.

I think my Dad must have taken at least 500GB+ worth of pictures from the cameras he's had. We just store them on lots of CDs and DVDs now.

Compared to your dad, I must be leaving my camera there to collect dust....:scared: Only used it twice in the last 2 months.

Our own pictures? I only have 862 MB (1572 files), although it's incomplete, the remainder is on the missus ibook. Older pictures are obviously at lower resolutions, so the average size doesn't mean much.

Isnt it better off just buying a ordinary External HDD?

Indeed, decent tape drives and their media are really expensive, and to simply backup files, it makes things simpler as you don't need any backup software. One caveat is that if the drive fails, you lose everything, but then again for the price of a tape drive you can buy a few external hard drives.

Carl.

Tape drives dont fail?

That sounds good. Only if I had the money...

Of course they do (had a few nightmare stories at work with these), but usually you'll have more than one tape with the data on it, depending on how you plan your backups.

[off-topic - starting to lean towards a thread hijack]

You won't find any at at a general retail store like Best Buy.

For example, a 160GB (up to 320GB compressed) DLT tape drive costs around 800-1000$, then add 20-30$ for each tape. You can find external 250 GB Hard Drives (so up to 500GB compressed) for under 150$. Or even better, an external HD enclosure / internal removable hard drive rack at around 20$-50$ and several 250GB internal Hard disks at under 100$ each.

@Giles:
And I thought I was bad with my ~10gb's. Yikes! Do you save them as Jpg's or Tiff's, or some other uncompressed format? Seriously though, do you have a backup of your photos? ;)

@AMG_SLK:
Good grief. What kind of camera and uncompressed file format are you using? Is digital photography your profession? When I first got my camera some time ago, I tried to compare the uncompressed format vs. the jpg format coming off of the camera and honestly I couldn't tell the difference. Where can you really tell the difference between the two?
