How often do you have lobby/connect issues?

So I see there are some people having problems while others don't seem to.
This is not a thread to bash Sony's Servers, just for me to get a better idea of whats happening with my connection, and hopefully fix, by understanding more about other peoples online experiences. Mine sucks right now and it is difficult to tell where the fault lies. Comcast or whoever.
Please do not post here unless you have a relevant take on server, network or latency issues.
This is intented to be a focused thread to help people identify connection issues that can be resolved, not a recap of your own personal experience if it is not relevant or contain good info OR is just a rant.

I generally play at night after my kids are in bed. 9 PM Pacific until?
I generally have at least a couple random discos a night as well as sporadic lag issues even though these should be non peak hours. My son played during the day today and suffered numerous discos which seemed to occur more often than they do to me at night, which makes sense from my providers, (Comcast's biggest pipes available), standpoint as it is common for Comcast customer to receive less bandwidth during the day as bandwidth is shared. I sometimes ping my bandwidth when having issues and see that it fluctuates. Seems like to me that DSL could be a better option as bandwidth is more consistent, but does not have the high speed range of Cable internet.
It is not that uncommon for my bandwidth to hover around 5k especially when multiple devices in use. My guess is that it takes at least 5k of dedicated bandwidth on our end to stream GT5, but it's just a guess. Is it possible that GT5 will never be all that stable due to it's bandwidth requirement exceeding what providers can consistently offer?

Heres something from my own experience that might help. Since you are from America, you are quite a bit away from the rest of us. Now, when I use to play GT5 at nights, the only servers on the list were ones hosted by Americans. Connecting to these servers was slow and laggy and sometimes I got disconnected. Maybe you are connecting to the wrong servers? Any server that isn't American will cause severe lag.

Also, beside the server you are about join, there are bars which measure your latency to the server. The higher the bars the better quality (connection wise) server.

If you are still getting regular disconnects and your internet is fine then I suggest contacting your ISP.

The problem is we dont actually have dedicated servers the whole deal is a pier to pier style connection, it sucks, what we need is some real servers, PD know thier internet routines are awful and have said they are trying to sort it out, in particular it has been really bad this month, i have a 50mg down and 5mg up fibre optic line and hardly never disconnect, probably a little over half a dozen times since GT5 came out, this month ive been disconnected 3 times. I read on IGN that they are aware the connection issues have been really bad and are working on fixing the issue, what that fix will turn out to be remains to be seen, but before any new cars / tracks / features are added this needs to be thier priority number one in my opinion.

I never have any major issues. Once last week the game froze after a race, then said I had been disconnected but that's only happened a few times. And my connection is nothing special. I find it hard to relate to people who have these problems and I don't understand why they do and others don't. I hope it's not too bad for anyone.

I run a league, theres 22 of us, it ruins races when others lose connection not just yourself, my connection is ok although its had its moments this month, but if guys who are fighting in the league disconnect it makes the leagues value less.

It's the speed of freaking light man. Doubt 40 extra feet of Cable really holding you back.

Data does travel at the same speed of light right? Anyway it's super fast and your stream generated at a Hub miles from your house so.....

Response to red above: I'm going to assume you errored and that should read 5Mbps(that is 5 million bits per second). 5kbps(5,000 bits per second) won't even barely get you connected to the net if that's what you're truely seeing. I have a lousy wireless internet connection. Wireless to the house that is, antenna on the roof. I have a mere 1.5Mbps download speed(very slow by todays standards) and an even worse .5Mbps up. I can race online, but if the room gets crowded with more than about 8-9 players I will undoubtedly start glitching then disco. To minimize the lag I often shut down my mic which seems to help a little, but it's not the cure. I simply need a faster connection.
There are 3 levels of NAT which you can have, with 3 being the worst. Now you would think that 1 would be the best but it really isn't, 2 is. If you have the bandwidth, and doing a PS3 speed test shows you as having a NAT2 connection, you ought to be able to race online quite successfully. I am of course NAT3 and have many problems staying connected.
You should try powering down all other devices attached to your internet except for your PS3 then performing a speed test on that alone so you get a baseline max internet speed reading. I would do it at a couple different times of day to see when the speed is best. Remember also that a pc that's turned on and connected to the net, even though it's not in use, may still be using up bandwidth by performing background updates and so forth. It's best to power them down completely to truely free up bandwidth.

I recently moved to a rural area and the high-speed internet options just suck. as such i am stuck with a private IP (which means NAT3) and I am getting a lotta issues in rooms that are not set to "Fixed Host". prior to the move, in the city, I had very little issues (NAT2). the speed/latency doesn't seem to be bad, it's the NAT 3. fixed host rooms however, are smooth sailing.

On some pathways it may travel upwards of 100Mbps, others it could be as low as 50k or even less. It all depends on how congested each section is between routers, the quality and speed of the routers in between each hop, the total distance for each packet to travel, and so on. As you can see it get's quite complicated quickly when trying to figure out what's causing you troubles with internet connections. About the best you can do is make sure your equipment is good shape. Buy good ethernet cables. Cat 6 is faster than 5. A quality router for a home network may be in order. Your modem from your cable company should be periodically updated to insure it has the most current set of instructions. This is normally done by your ISP. Wipe your cache in your PS3 prior to a racing session online. In options go to Network and select Clear Cache.
Power cycle your router and modem before racing. Sometimes they get glitchy from overuse and can become unstable.
Flash the firmware on your router. Go to the router manufacturers website and read up on how to do this. Don't do it if you're not comfortable with more advanced things like this though. It's possible to mess it up.

These are all just suggestions to help make the online racing experience better and more stable for you.

I had the same issue and ended up running 35' of ethernet cable. I've been disconnected once in the last 5 months since doing this. My connection issues were caused by the wireless connection.
