How the hell do I get rid of the steering wheel in GT5?

I have my screens set up perfectly now, right size, surround, I can see the speedo and tach right through my CSR elite on almost every car. Its almost perfect one to one of a real cockpit.

Buuuuuut, I can't get rid of the on screen steering wheel. I thought this could be done.

Also, I thought you could use the head tracking in career already. GT5 would be perfect if I could get these two things done. Is this possible?

IIRC head tracking is available for Arcade Beginner mode only (The reason that Head Tracking can't be used in modes other than Arcade Beginner is because of the Race Physics memory overhead in Arcade Inter/Expert and A-Spec. With the additional physics applied to those races, there is no memory free to process the tracking.)

You need to have the playstation eye close to you (no more than a meter away and ensure the Eye has good lighting conditions).

Plug in the Eye and go to the Main Options screen and pick the Eye Calibration section.

From there the game will ask you to adust a rectangle to fit your head. It will also auto recognise and track your face from this screen. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the movment.

In game (Arcade) it allows you 4 degrees of movement (L,R,U,D). This movement is continous, rather than the key activated views. Just move your head (not eyes) and the view changes.

LOL, I already use head tracking buddy. I'm asking why it won't let me use it in other modes. :)

What about the steering wheel?

Sorry, in that case ignore everything above except for this:

I think you're stuck with the wheel unless you use bumper view, etc.

Short answer is no.

Head tracking only works in Arcade as far as I'm aware.

And the only way you can get rid of/reduce size of the steering wheel is by using a narrower cockpit view. But then you'd lose the speedo etc.

Damn, I could have sworn that I read an article that there was an update a few months ago that let you turn off the steering wheel. Where did I see that. Gah.

I'm kinda pissed since I have the camera and all three screens set up pretty much perfect. As I'm sitting in the seat and look through my wheel I see all the gauges as if I was in the car. Its great. Only thing that breaks the illusion is the every once in a while when I see the second set of hand on sharp turns.

Since you're running multiscreen, you can adjust the option for FOV in the in-race pause menu and by that you will drastically limit the perceived area of the wheel.

Indeed and some cars look or feel better with the closer/near viewpoint of course dependant on your FOV setting within multiscreen options. I do wish FM4 had this feature as well.

As for headtracking in the beginning I think it only worked in "Time Trial" with multiscreens. It has been that long since I have had all my toys connected together and with new patches so that maybe it needs confirmed if Arcade option in racing with other cars is working. I also wouldn't rule out a future patch enabling it within A-SPEC but we have to remember they will likely have other priorities which appeal to a wider userbase.

I really, REALLY hope they include a simple checkbox to remove the hands and wheel in a not-so-future patch. It's absolutely silly not too, seeing as how many people play with wheels and sim rigs these days.

Not to mention it would probably give a small FPS boost.

Yeah I've goofed around with the zoom/zoom more/wide. I still keep it at wide because I like the way the gauges look through the steering wheel. Very immersion. :P

If you haven't noticed my never ending quest is to feel as if i'm in a real car. I know I'll never get there but its fun trying. The D-Box has pretty much crushed the fun for my consoles now. I still play the console racing games because I love the progression.

I'm praying that the new consoles coming out next year at least have multi-screen support from one console as is rumored with the new Xbox. Hopefully D-box will follow through on their promise to get support for the next gen consoles as well.

I am soooo with you here.

For some odd reason console race games never have the option which makes me scratch my head. To add insult to injury, no console even has correct hand animations (except Shift2), and it makes it more distracting!

I got spoiled with PC sims being able to click "off" the sterring wheel.

Standard cars don't have steering wheels, so you could drive more of those. Maybe that is what you saw, a picture of a standard interior.
I don't think they are ever gonna add it in an update. I don't think the demand/need is high enough to justify the work. There are more important things they should be fixing/working on, like glitches, new cars, and tracks.

Pointless? If I already have a steering wheel in my hands (which is perfectly aligned to look life size and in the car), why do I need to look at another one on the screen? I know most people play this game on a controller, and those who do play it on a wheel normally don't have it perfectly setup, but there are those of us like Mayaman and myself who spend the extra time and effort to get everything looking perfect. Not being able to turn off the wheel is a nuisance.

Not only that but you have 2 steering wheels, and both of them turn at different rates. The In game wheel turns very little compared to what you turn your sim wheel and how much that car would be turning in real life. Less than half what it should. Its a joke.

I agree the option should be there but they should also fix the wheel animation which IMO is more important because I like the in game wheel and hands.
When I'm looking at the game I focus only on the screen and not whats in front me outside the screen, especially in 3D. The onscreen wheel and hands ideally become like my own. So I would prefer to keep it the way it is but with correct wheel animations, with the option to turn it off.

Bloody PD, visionary nutters they are. Just give us the damn option. What really annoys me if it would be such a simple thing to do. They barely have to do anything. Its half a days work. They already have 900 degree wheel animations working in gt5p beta from some pre release vids we have seen. And to remove the wheel Is probably just a few codes they have to take out.

I don't understand why anyone would want to do this. Absolutely pointless.

As you can see, a lot of people do find it very distracting. I'm at a loss as to how it can be distracting, but that's just for me. Everyone's brain and eyes work a little differently. It's a VERY well known issue in the PC racing world, so it would make sense that PD would make it an option. Assuming that they ever pay any attention to anything that happens outside of their own doors, which is debatable ;) .

A pet hate of mine as well, so bumpercam for me. One thought and probably stupid to most although helpfull to some. Cut out a half circle shape from a cardboard that blends in with your monitor colour or maybe out of matt / aluminium cardboard. Then place or tape in front of monitor and bling up if required.:nervous:

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the extra steering wheel and set of hands in cockpit view? I have a wheel... and two hands to steer with. I don't need an extra set on screen to distract me and eat frame rate.

PD - Please, PLEASE add a simple checkbox to the options to turn off the wheel/hand display.

Thank you, and have a nice holiday. :sly:

Meh, normally I just use the roof/bonnet cam so it doesn't really bother me.
I do however support the idea of adding the option to turn it off.
It would please both ds3 and wheel players. 👍
