So I had this happen to me about three or four times so far... Or at least three or four times that I noticed.
I was in first place on a race a couple of days ago in Monza, and had a 10s lead to the second place. I was lapping faster than him, and was opening about 1s per lap. Then...
All of a sudden in three turns the guy takes 4 seconds out of the difference. I didn't make any mistakes, slowed down or anything, as a matter of fact my lap time that lap was within .3 of my fastest lap (which was the fastest lap of the race).
After that, it wen't back to me being faster than him by about 1s/lap. I ended up winning by some 7s or so.
Did anyone notice something like that happen? Like I said, I've noticed a couple of times before, but it wasn't until this last race that I was able to actually confirm by comparing my own lap times and knowing for sure that I didn't mess up anything on my lap. What makes it completely weird to me is that if the 2nd place indeed took 4s out on that lap his lap would have to be the fastest lap on the race (not to mention that it would be faster than the top 10 by at least a couple of seconds).
Anyone?
