I don't understand qualify position for daily races

I was put in a p2 for my first race. About .5 sec behind first place time. Finished second. Then got into the next race, same qualify time as the first race, but was placed 7th, about 2.5 seconds behind first place time.

This seems to happen a lot. I am put in front for first race, finish decent, then next race put in the middle or back of pack.

I just don't get why it changes so fast.

Could it be not enough people with closer lap times??

Doesn't seem to matter what my Q-time is. I am always in mid pack with 1st about 6-8 seconds faster than I am. I am not a good enough driver to be with that type of competition.

Don't forget that those DR:S drivers are getting thrown a bone by the game too.

Every race I had today had a different DR:S driver in it taking the pole, fastest lap, win.

Not everyone spends the same amount of time on their qualifying runs -- some people don't have time to qualify before the event start, and others don't even bother qualifying. And among your competitors for a particular race, who knows what factors are in the qualifying mix. Maybe a very fast driver had time for only one qualifying lap and they made a big mistake and ended up starting toward the rear. So they might appear slow by their qualifying time. Or maybe a slow driver cut some corners but the system did not issue a penalty, so they qualified much faster than they really should, so they start well for the final.

When I started I won my first 3/4(?) races in a row. Since then I’ve not been able to win and I’ve gotten faster

^ this, me too. The system had no idea how to rank me as a new player so I won my first two Sport mode races.. I thought "this game is awesome" LOL =D I've won a couple since but now it's pretty rare.

I like that GTS gives players the opportunity to qualify so if qualifying in first, able to avoid all the carnage if any of the racers are dirty.

I get those answers, but there are times lets say I qualify p2 or 4 somewhere in the front. Then I finish crappy in like 10 or worse. Then next race back up front. But I finish up front then I start mid to back of pack. Just feels like finish position has something to do with the next race

And with daily races. If it is your first race you really don't have any idea where you will qualify

A guess as I am sure match making is a complex affair but it would seem that the qualifying time isn’t part of the match making criteria. That appears to look at SR and DR to group players, once the group is decided and placed into the lobby the qualifying time is used to sort the grid.
