Title says it all, stupidly I didn't realise my phone was resting on the edge of my laptop whilst it was closed, I stood up and it flew into my glass of orange squash. Anyway to cut a long story short, it's now dried out (I've used the rice trick and I left it on the radiator for an hour or so) but when I load the phone, the software seems to go schizophrenic and closes all applications once it's loaded, without giving me a chance to do anything. The problem is, I'm on a 24 month contract with over 12 months left and stupidly I never got insurance for the handset. So, what can I do? Is there anyway I get a free replacement or will it incur a charge?

In case you're wondering, It's HTC Wildfire (Not the S) and it's running on Android.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Exact same phone as me.

I recommend leaving it in the airing cupboard (more humid) for an extended period of time. Play the wait and see game for now.

No there's not. The best advice I can offer up is to go on amazon or buy.com and look for "unlocked" smartphones. You can get some cheap one that will get you through your current contract. This has happened to me before and now I have a waterproof phone!

Coincidence? I don't have an airing cupboard at my mother's, however I'm at my father's tomorrow and he does, but I don't see how it will fix the problem.

It (may) dry it out better than a radiator. A radiator is just one mildly warm spot, whereas an airing cupboard is a totally humid environment.

Disassemble the battery and SIM of course.

Didnt really think that out did you.
Google definition of humid.
Marked by a relatively high level of water vapor in the atmosphere

Wrong adjective on my part. But I hope you know what I'm getting at...

Over here you can upgrade half way through a 24 month contract and you just continue to pay the old handset installments on top of the new one (they extend contract length by a year), maybe they do it in the UK aswell. Which carrier? (not that it should matter).

Well I'm not sure if my mother could afford the payments (she pays for the contract) as things aren't easy in the current economic climate. I'm on a company called Tesco Mobile, which is a trading name for a Network called O2.

If this happened over 5 hours ago it's probably dry by now, meaning trying again to make it dry won't help since it can't get any drier.

It's a long shot, but you can try reinstalling it's OS. Maybe, just maybe, the flash memory got screwed up with the water but still works fine, so reinstalling will work. But from what you describe I think something got fried there, and there won't be an easy fix.

Take note that if some component really is damaged, if you try to reinstall the OS it can go horribly wrong, and your phone may not even turn on anymore.

Weird...my brother left his M240 out during a strong thunderstorm. It took a week to get back to normal. It just lost its sound, miraculously.

Stop everything and listen to Jon Bentley.

Tom does your phone have/run applications from the microSD card slot? it's possible the contacts are sticky on both the card and the phone.

Try checking the HTC website about accidental damage and see what the cost would be.

Not that I'm aware of RT.

I've just done a Factory Reset on the phone, I'll let you know what happens.

EDIT: Everything seems to be running fine now.

Not true. I dropped my ipod touch in water a couple years ago and it didn't work for 3 full days. First day I got it to start up and then 2nd day I could actually swipe screens before it crashed and now I can use it and literally nothing is wrong with it at all.

If not amazon/ebay/Craigslist may be your best bet. Even if it's some old flip phone atleast you have a phone.

Knowing how big a phone is, and how big a glass is, you have some hella aim right there. You play darts or something?

Well, it was in a pint sized glass. As for darts, no I don't, but I'm thinking that with this new revelation, I should certainly consider it.

Is Orange squash just like orange soda syrup/concentrate? Or is it something totally different?
