Hi.
I was riding my bike tonight when I saw a plane across the clear sky. There was a bright, huge orange light on it, so I took a closer look...it looked like flames were licking the plane, bright and orange...they were flying relatively low...am I seeing a crash live or is this just a coincidence?

Not very descriptive. What kind of plane was it? You might have seen a bird strike, or some other engine failure.

Looked like a commercial plane.

I just curious but have you ever heard of the sun? It tends to reflect off of things.

Also have you ever turned on the news? It tends to report plane crashes.

Did you see it crash or keep flying? That would be a good indicator of whether or not there was a plane crash.

I think it's over now...I don't see any reports...it kept flying when I saw it.

An aircraft at altitude can be in sunlight quite a bit of time after the sun has dipped below the horizon as seen from the ground. I think you saw the sunset colors lighting up the airplane.

This was at 9:30 though, the sunset passed...

Edit: Now I understand your quote.

Also, engine fires may go unreported because they are fairly common. Sounds scary, but, they are engineered to withstand a bird strike and fire.

Reminds me of the first time I shipped hazardous material as a very green shipper, by FedEx.

That evening, FedEx plane was on fire on the news. My reaction was pretty much "Aww 🤬".

If it had been a fire there probably would have been a thick plume of smoke, not just contrails, tailing the aircraft.

I agree with the sun-reflection conspiracy, damn that sun.
