I hope your driver is better characterised in this game

The previous GT games all sucked because of the driver's non existent personality. What were his motivations? Who is he? Who does he care about? What does he even look like? We all know that the characters are what should be important in a driving simulator such as GT. The gameplay is insignificant if there is no charm to the main characters.

Kazunori should consider this and be very, very ashamed of himself for making those awful first 5 GT games. Why even have cars in the game if there is such a lack of clear character development?

Meh. I'm not too sure about that as I never really liked the B-spec mode in the GT-series. I enjoy driving a car myself & not just watching a computer doing it.

But it might lighten up the B-spec for those of us playing it.

Uh, the character is you. It makes sense to have him/her remain faceless. The game doesn't have a story, and I'd argue that it definitely does not need one, so there's no need for characters.

The core experience of GT mode is what I love about the GT series. Sure, it has this surreal feel to it but that's part of the draw for me. I'm fanatical about driving, but it's the experience of feeling like you earn and own the cars that makes it GT for me. To me, sim's and arcade games alike fail to deliver in this aspect at all. I don't think they need to fundamentally change that at all - they just need to expand on the content and the realism of the experience.

So, on that basis, all five of the games in the Gran Turismo series are 'awful' because the AI aren't fully developed characters, and PD is to be ashamed of themselves because of this.

Why? Their goal was to create the most realistic driving simulator on console. Not a developed story.

I sort of agree with you. Not sure why the OP even bothered playing/buying the first five GTs then though.

Those two goals go hand in hand

Wanting more human AI drivers is one thing, and having set drivers with different personalities/racing styles/car preferences that you see pop up again and again throughout your career would be pretty fun. But, in the OP, you're complaining about the players character. The character is you. What are your motivations? Who are you? What do you care about? What do you even look like?

This isn't Grand Theft Auto. There's no story to be told, you play it for your own motivations. For 10million+, that has seemed like a good enough reason for the last 15 years.

'Awful first 5 GT games' someone best tell 70 million people they've been scammed...

(I agree there could be some more background to the drivers, but cheesy cut-scenes NFS style are a big no no)

This.

Its not some anime with characters, stories and what not. Get in the car, drive your way from the bottom to the top and enjoy it.

OP should be ashamed of the trash he talked about uncle Kaz Yam :mischievous:.

And yes Kaz should be deeply ashamed of making the best selling and one of the most critically acclaimed racing simulators (Despite what you often read on here GT has always faired well in reviews, maybe less so for GT PSP) and selling 70 million of them in the process...

Just because it sold well doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with it or that it can't be improved. I think the OP has a point and I think many of us agree that the whole A-Spec part of the game is boring, repetitive and not very challenging to all but the neophytes. It could surely use a revamping, not the least of which is a well developed career mode, and personalities and the development of "rivals" would be a welcome addition if done well. It's something that could be developed over time with DLC and updates as certain personalities and characters prove more or less popular. I think it's an idea worth considering. 👍

First I would like to say this

Lame trolling is lame:dopey:

The biggest and definitely the most optimistic hope would be getting a genius GT movie (series), which will have massive influence on an outstanding career mode in coming GT titles.
Dreaming is an act of pure imagination, attesting in all men a creative power, which if it were available in waking, would make every man a Dante or Shakespeare.

I don't doubt that at all, and there's nothing wrong with coming up with new ideas or giving constructive criticism. However I do think it is very disrespectful to slag Kaz and PD off like that, basically saying everything they've done over the last 15 years is worthless because there are no characters in the game.

Character development in a GT game is just as unnecessary as this GT-movie that is rumoured to be in the works, in my opinion.

The GT-series arguably is as successful as it is, exactly because it is as "puristic" as it is.

Agreed, but it also serves no purpose to focus on the hyperbole or outlandish statements and avoid discussing the overall message. If you redirect the conversation to something constructive, you end up with a much better thread compared to focusing on what could be trollling.

There really isn't a message to this, the stuff we do on other threads has a direction to it and actual good conversation for the most part. This is an outright troll and should have been ignored and hopefully shut down. The OP has yet to explain how his idea would improve the game and how exactly they failed in the world of simulation racing due to a feature that I think everyone but the "troll" (which really doesn't want it) could do with out.

His name is Bob and he's from outer space. He can crash into cars without damaging them and he uses tires from materials not from this planet giving his car extreme amounts of grip that allow him to pass all his slow opponents that are driving for their licence test. He also likes to use alien-fuel that give cars a distinct sound no car on earth produces.

His goal in life is one: Gotta catch 'em all. He's here with the solo purpose of collecting and changing oil to every single skyline, miata and s2000.

Is this a joke thread or something?

Characters have absolutely zero significance in a racing sim.

I'm not sure what the OP is asking for in GT6? What I make out of it is that you want something like in Forza 3; the same drivers under the same names and they drive slightly differently with different driving styles, with arguably the most memorable one being M.Rossi who almost always drives red cars and takes you out whenever possible.

And even so, I don't think this would be relevant to GT6 being a good sim. The character in the game is you, and you define who your character is. So yes, PD has to generalise the actual character displayed in-game because they cannot be 100% sure who their customers are.

Gran Turismo is not Grand Theft Auto. Having deep characters in a game that doesn't have a storyline is just a waste.

I think it's an idea worth considering.

I think any idea that contains the tagline "Kazunori should be very ashamed of himself for..." is nothing but a big pile of 🤬. If an idea is good it can be presented with some dignity, it doesn't need any of that ignorant nonsense.

Uh no the guy is basically saying GT should be an rpg, and you get a character that has a deep story and drives cars all day. So not like FM3 or any other simulation game.

I fail to see the OPs point in making this thread. It's just more out of left field unnecessary unconstructive PD/Kaz bashing.

There is criticism and then there is trolling, it's quite clear what this guy is doing. I'm not seeing why you guys are still questioning it and some actually taking him seriously. It's obvious due to the fact it is a new user, and they are purposely posting crazy stuff to start a flame war, I'm sure a mod will catch wind and shut it down.

Believe me, I'm not trying to start a flame war

This made me laugh.

Characters are for RPG's, not driving simulators.
