Started GT4 with the original joystick controllers, and then quickly bought the Driving Force EX, and after about 4000miles logged on my cars altogether, I decided to buy the PRO.
I made the decision because I was viewing my replays and noticed alot (or at least some) jerky steering inputs. I also noticed that I was hitting my steering locks quite frequently on the EX. None of that is good for speed and low lap times, so I went to get the PRO.
First impressions: physically the pedals/pedal platform is larger, and sturdier looking, steering wheel is a level higher in overall quality and build, and the Pro uses ONLY a USB plug in! (no controller port plug in like the EX had). This is great for me, now I can use my cordless controller for photoshoots and replays while I'm lounging around the game room, and I can hop back into my drivers seat and play with the wheel whenever I want without unplugging the wheel or controller to plug in the other one!
I took the PRO onto Apricot Hill with my FGT car and loaded a few EX controlled ghosts, and noticed almost instantly, I was easily able to keep up with my fastest ghost, until I got to the hairpin, where it took my several tries to figure out how to steer through it correctly. I went to Japan and ran a few of the GT races that I'd had trouble with the day before (with my LOCTITE NSX) and didn't have nearly the trouble with them using the PRO.
I still haven't quite mastered the increased steering capability of the PRO yet, but I pronounce it VASTLY superior to the EX, for time trialing and race winning experiences. For simple arcade modes and ease of learning, the EX is probably a better choice, but once you get hooked on finding the 'fastest' lap possible, I think the PRO is a necessity.
P.S. I wrote this because I thought that the opinion might help someone make the choice between the two, and I didn't feel like sorting through the 120 some odd pages that the Wheel thread had become to find out if anyone had done a similar comparison.
thanks, and no, I'm not selling the EX, but instead going to make a second set up to play 2 player games with.
Sorry if this should be in the Driving Force Pro (DFP) Wheel Discussion Forum, please move.
P.S.S. the FF, and the high speed oscillations are different than the EX. The FF is 'different' and the oscillations are greatly reduced (when trying to make a straight line at about 230mph). The Pro is altogether a better built unit. One more note: when you crash, spin out, and have to reverse using the 'O' button, it will be significantly harder given the full rotation of the PRO and trying to hold down a stupid button for the reverse.
