Well, branching from the Liberal Names thread, I've decided that the time has come to name my iBook (which is something that all good Mac citizens do... you Windoze people wouldn't understand). Anyway, I've always been bad at names, so any suggestions? (And no, I won't accept "Steve Jobs" as a name...)

Hey, Bob's actually not a bad idea! My brother-in-law's name was Bob, and he passed away from cancer about a year ago, so it could be a nice little tribute to him... Who's Steve Wozniak? Is this another Dutch thing?

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law, Sage...

Bob's a great name! It's what I'd call my PC if it wasn't named Burt already.

Steve Wozniak, look it up. Somewhere.

Oh my gosh ... and you call yourself a Mac guy ... that's just sad.

Tell us about your iBook and maybe we'll have better suggestions. I'm using a brand new 14" model to write this reply - oh, and I'm using the new Safari web browser as well. It's nifty, but something doesn't feel right. Oh that's right, I'm on a MAC!

Heh heh ...

Cerebro, This was the name I gave my first PC nearly 10 years ago. Before there was a cartoon or a movie.

AO

Oh, and we "Windoze people" would know about naming our computer. Mine is Splat, as in "*". My hard drives are bang "!" and buck "$".

Most people use Greek or Roman god names. Some people name their computer after real people. Some name it after themselves ... a friend of mine named his computer "Constant" - originally for the computer variable "constant", but later redeclaired it "constant headache" (:

Okay, okay! Sheesh! :P

Hey, I'm using Safari too! I don't like it though... I prefer Chimera's tabbed browsing (and Safari has lousy cookies support).

Oh, and, doesn't the 14" iBook cost about the same as the brand-spankin' new 12" PowerBook? (Oh, and, please don't tell me that you don't want the 17" model! *drools*)

Let's see... my iBook treats me pretty well. No major crashes, except when I messed up Finder after dealing with a theme hack. It could use a speed boost though... and the fan turns on quite often. :)

I name them after whiskies, so my main desktop at home is Talisker, the Laptop is Clynelish, and the server is Caol-Ila.

There's all sorts of great-sounding whisky names, like Tomintoul, Tobermory, Lagavulin, Laphroaig (pr: Laff-roy-g, hard 'g'), Glengoyne etc.

That said, if I were to choose a whisky name for a Mac, I would probably go for Dufftown. ;)

I assume that's not a compliment? Personally, I'd name my Mac "Maker's Mark". My Windoze machine , on the other hand, would be "Something Cheap That Will Give Me A Hangover".

Jim Bob is better than Bob.

If you are referring to the Job in the Bible, He was much plagued, but came out ahead in the end.
As for a name I think "the Football" is appropriate. (I know I'm late).
The president has a guy that carries a briefcase called "The Football" that has a phone to all the armed forces and NORAD and controls the Nuclear warheads of the US of A.
You're controlling all the important stuff in your life. See the parallels?:D
Of course if your football goes "teats up" the rest of the planet won't be destroyed......

He is, I believe, the patron saint of lost causes...

Actually, Saint Christopher is the patron saint of lost causes. That's why cops and nurses, particularly those that are Catholic, often recieve St. Christopher medals upon graduation from the Police Academy or Nursing School.

God allowed Satan to plague Job with many afflictions. Satan believed that Job would curse God, and turn away from Him if he was so afflicted.
Anyway, Job continued to serve God and worship Him even though he was losing everything. He even rebuked his wife when she advised him to "Curse God and die."
In the end his blessing/reward was that everything that he lost: His land, his children, his livestock was returned to him "sevenfold".
When you hear someone say "God takes care of his children. After all look at Job". That's what they mean.

Thank Big Gus, (My dad), He preached the Gospel for nearly 60 years.
He'd be glad to know y'all caught me payin' attention.
