I need some ways to get good gas mileage on a 5-speed.

^ Title. I've noticed that in my car, which is a 5-Speed Honda Accord, I am getting nowhere near the gas mileage my dad got when he drove it. My only possible explaination is that I drive somewhat (not much) faster than my dad did, but I don't think that could account for him getting almost 100 miles more per tank than I do.

I don't think that could be it, because my dad had been driving it regulary up until about 6 months ago, and got 400 per tank even then.

Some of the run of the mill Honda 4 cyls have good low end torque. So you shouldnt have to rev past 3,000rpm in it. I remember when my Honda was new I got 39mpg's one time...

coast down hills :)

I'd go along with lower RPMs and don't race around as much(but what fun is that?).

Take it from me, keep the RPM's as low as you can and you will save a small fortune. i know that if i go around driving the ACR redlining it everywhere i go that i can get about half an hour down the road on a half tank.

Drive slower too. I used to run 110mph on the freeways going to work everyday, then I slowed it down to 80 and my gas milage nearly doubled. Now that I live in LA, there's so much traffic everywhere, I barely get to break 70 and my milage is even better.

The faster the speed, the more the throttle is opened and the more fuel is pumped into the engine.

Also use the brakes to slow down, not the famed double-clutching downshift.
A. you'll keep the revs down.
B. It's way cheaper to replace brake pads/shoes than a clutch.

True, but I'm still an obsessive-compulsive rev-matching downshifter. Usually only to third though. :)
You can pull 2-3 mpg out of not doing that. It is fun though to nail a downshift just perfectly.:D

Yea downshifting rocks. My dad's RX-7 sounds great, right around 5K RPM there's a sort of "yeeeeeee" sound from the rotors and above that it's just all out nice sounding.

Our MPV sounds good too, same with the 3. MX-6GT and my bro's Probe GT don't sound good to me really. Ohh and my dad's Probe GT sounds really good.

Really? Ergh...I dunno. I like to keep the gears low in case I have to move suddenly.

I guess I could try it for a week or two and see how much of a difference it makes. Probably not much in my case, since I'll still be winding out a few gears here and there.

I guess I already failed at keeping my RPMs down for this tank of gas. My car was the only one in a snowy, slick parking lot. I coudln't resist redlining it, popping the clutch, peeling out. Then I E-Braked a few donuts. Well worth however much gas it wasted.

:D sometimes i just get the urge to do the same thing, but then i realise that one set of tires for my car are as expensive as most of the cars my friends drive so i usually resist the urge and pull away slowly.

Been there, done that, bro. lol :D I miss the midwest.

You're still on the first page for me.

You could probably go on a diet or something, shave a few pounds off, and you might save a buck every couple years.
