Lot of people complaining about the wheel "breaking free" when you over turn and your wheels lose traction. The main reason is because it doesn't feel like GT5.

It's not supposed to feel like GT5. This is Shift 2. As you level up and progress the "feel" of Shift 2 starts to make a lot more sense. Once you hit the Supercars, on the GP tracks, it's amazing. I love the wheel breaking free.

There is not a moment in GT5 that comes close the excitement and thrill you get pushing a Zonda on the very edge of grip around a sweeper, you're Wheel kicking in and out, wrestling back and forth, because if you take it just a hair further, you're out of control and spinning around. Best sensation I've had in a racing game.

I think SMS did a great job making a product that stands out. Who wants another GT5 in different skin. I've put over 20 hours in the game and am only 23% complete in career, haven't seen all the tracks, haven't touched online yet.

Thanks Slightly Mad Studio's for a tremendous and FUN game!!!:dopey::dopey:

now I await getting bashed and flamed...

+1. I feel the exact same way.

After some thinking and racing in the game, I realized that SMS did this on purpose. They wanted to give us the closest thing to a true adrenaline rush. Once I realized that, I stopped comparing the game to GT5 and started appreciating what SMS did. They made a sim racer but what it simulates isn't the driving itself but the driver behind the wheel and what he experiences.

I use a DS3, and prefer the feel of GT5 so far, but I'm still fiddling with the settings.
I dropped the deadzone to 0 and the sensitivity to 10 and it got a lot better, but I'm going to lower it some more next time I play.

I can't imagine what the game feels like with a DS3. I'm really glad I have a wheel...

Totally agreed. Different =/= bad

People who enjoy the game with a wheel, what was your thought of Shift 1 with the wheel? I hated Shift 1 when using a wheel but think I will eventually pick up Shift 2. It seems like wheel users like this one a lot better than the first?

The Wheel is by far more solid than Shift 1 straight out of the box. With a few tweaks to the settings. (I put deadzone on 2 to help with the "weaving" Speed Sensitivity to 50, and accelerator sensitivity to 35) It's brilliant...

Just discovered this and it helps tremendously. All cars default tuning settings have the spring rates set to the lowest possible rate which is why the cars seem floaty also the tuning steering lock seems to be way to low it is set at 20 for default. I have mine set between 26-28 that along with my x box wheel settings has the cars driving like true race cars with excellent response and feel. I just hope they give us a patch for stronger ffb.

I agree. I've only put an hour or so in so far, but it feels so natural to drive. I have the pc copy for now (getting it for ps3 today), and there is absolutely no lag or swaying with my G27. Helmet cam is great, but I think only works its best when you're driving good lines.

The suspension modelling is incredible.

Compared to Shift 1, Shift 2 is miles ahead. The thing that frustrated me most with Shift 1 (other than the vague controls) was that all the cars always seemed to be 4-wheel drifting around corners (like the whole car just moves horizontally across the road, hard to explain) and was especially noticeable in the TV replays. This has gone completely, and the cars look fantastic on the track now.

Handling wise, the only thing they seemed to have toned down is the throttle response. It seems harder to break loose by stamping the throttle while steering, whether this is because longitudinal grip has been increased or the throttle input is filtered I don't know, but otherwise it seems excellent. Easy to spin/go off track if you overcook the corners, and different cars actually feel different.

Now I have also seen vids of people with the Fanatec wheels where there is steering lag (not just visual), which is sad to see as it seems the Fanatec wheels have issues. My G27 is spot on though, and even the visual steering matches except for very rapid movements, which I wouldn't expect to keep up.

I went back and watched the comparison vid at Nordschliefe with GT5/Forza3/Shift2, and I must say the suspension in GT5 looked digital, as in there is none and the car just goes up and down according to the height of the ground. Didn't notice it before Shift 2.

Some of the menu controls on PC are a bit weird. Took me a while to realise you actually have to click the 'Save' button with the mouse for it to save your video and control settings :P The keyboard symbol for 'Save' is the Up arrow, which of course does not do that, WTF?
Also I have noticed the low FFB at race start, press ESC and again and suddenly the FFB was stronger. Didn't happen every time though.

Can't wait to get further into the game, I'm loving it.

Another feature I really like is that the Competition is dynamic.

No matter what car you have the other cars are all in your class and competitive. If I want to Time Attack in my Golf I can and will have competition and challenge from the others. Then If I want to replay in my GTR R-35 I can and still have competition and challenge. Just a great touch, and a lot better than simply overpowering the races like you can in GT5.

Spot on, Nuck! Totally agree about driving. Also love that variable difficulty, makes replay value incredible.

HeadsoupBob, what's your ea ID? Want to add you to my autolog.

Reading posts from people who have the same hardware as i do going well puts a smile on my face... can't wait for the package to arrive.

Also I'm really amazed by how in depth and subtle the Helmet cam is. There are tons of cues that it gives you.

Not only looking at the Apex but the way it blurs out the car when in a turn and then snaps into focus after the Apex cuing you to Smash the throttle.

The way the head leans into the turns (I find myself doing that when I drive anyway).

He gives you shifting cues

He tunnels out at high speed

He turns his head at the braking points

Just plain cool...

Nice man.I never really noticed that.I kind of got frustrated with the helmet cam and went to hood cam instead.Looks like i'll be trying that helmet cam once again. 👍

Yep, definitely cool. It effectively increases the number of events by a significant amount. A great feature that more games should have.

Sweet, another positive thread. I am with you on this all the way. I haven't play GT5 since late Dec due to its lack of content and excitement. Stronger FFB would be nice. Feeling a little something when you loose traction is better than the wheel going limp. But I understand why. My driving arm is a bit sore from fighting with the wheel. I too logged about 20 hrs Tuesday and Wednesday alone.

Its only gets better as you progress thru your career.Once I really get the physics down, I plan on jumping online. Autolog is great and is a close to online competitiveness I will get thus far.

Most of my time is spent tuning. There is quite a bit to pay attention to here. I will most definitely stick with S2U. I can imagine what improvements they will do. Its already a good game out the box. I hope they don't try to do too much and ruin some aspects of it.

I agree! I like this game more than I like GT5....

I am a complete noob at drifting. I have spent the last 6-8 weeks to learn how to drift in GT5, with a DFGT wheel. I know, i'm slow :) But it is great fun. I could not drift one single corner i Tsukuba the first week or so. Made all mistakes you can make. Slowly after spending many hours on the Top Gear Test Track I finally found a few pieces of the puzzle.

Now I drift all corners separately, but not linking them very good. So I thougt: hey I can drift. I'll try it out in Shift 2....what happened was catastrophic failure. Back to square one. Nothing worked at all.

Yesterday night I took the Drifting challenge/school. It was really nice, but hard. At first I had no control of the car whatsoever. Slowly slowly something happened it started to make sense. I could make some small progress and steer the car around the obstacles. Yippie! ( It seems like the drifting is more sensitive than in GT5, much smaller inputs and MUCH less throttle is needed) . But since i recently was in the same position, but that time in GT5, I knew that It is just a matter of practicing practicing. I now know that i WILL be able to drift in Shift 2 as well. And by doing this drifting tutorial (3 lessons) the Drifters playground track is now unlocked :) Just say it out loud... Drifters playground.

SHIFT 2 is highly recommended!

Definitely feeling better as I progress through the career, getting more cars...

PS: Check the Spring Rates settings, almost all the production cars have them set to the Softest by default. My Caterham handles better when set them to medium.

Thanks for this thread. It's nice to see positive feedback (no pun intended) about this game. :)

Definitely agree , there are times the graphics are noticeably worse but everything else is better than GT5. Especially actually being concerned when AI cars are catching up behind you :)
