I want to buy a racing wheel, but not sure what to go for

So I am entirely new to Gran Turismo really. I purchased Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and love it; though I've seen videos on youtube of people that actually have seats and steering wheels and such to play on. I want to be able to push my car to the best of its abilities with a good gearbox, steering wheel, etc. I'm just not sure which to buy. I need your help guys; I need the steering wheel, gearbox, and seat. I'm hoping someone here has a really good set up, I'd like to know who

Without getting into the insane price range categories such as ECC. The best steering wheel for the merer mortal wokld be Logitechs G27. Happy racing ;)

Where are you from?
What's your budget?
What system do you have (ps3, xbox, pc?)

then after knowing that i can help...

What Delphic Reason said.
The G27 is good overall and has a nice price tag
The Gt3Rs from fanatec is a bit more expensive but you can upgrade it over time (CSP (pedals), CSS (shifter), handbrake)

Here is a review and comparaison of both wheels

And for the wheelstand you have some options:
foldable (playseat, fanatec,...)
fix (i don't know any in range in america)
DIY (good ideas here in the forums)

For a $700 budget, you could get yourself a Logitech G27, a Playseat Evoloution and side Shift mount:

Wheel: http://www.amazon.com/Playseat-Gearshift-Holder-Mount-Silver/dp/B001ED7EXS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1282681105&sr=8-7

Seat: http://www.amazon.com/Playseat-Evolution-Gaming-Black-Silver/dp/B000K9Q5UK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1282681052&sr=8-1

Shift mount: http://www.amazon.com/Playseat-Gearshift-Holder-Mount-Silver/dp/B001ED7EXS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1282681357&sr=8-7

And maybe a buttkicker thrown in for good measure: http://www.amazon.com/Buttkicker-BK-GR2-ButtKicker-BK-GR-Gamer/dp/B000AOTLP6/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1282681147&sr=8-10

Including shipping, it's all in within your budget. This would be my choice. And I have to say, Amazon currently has the G27 for $200 flat--that's as cheap as I've seen it yet.

So I'm digging the fanatec porsche gt3 wheel; it also means I have to get the h-pattern shifter (of course) But I was wondering if I can still use the playseat with the fanatec wheel, shifter and pedals? Reason I ask is because the fanatec cockpit is like $1200

I don't know if the holes are already in for the fanatec, but it surly fits

The fanatec cockpit is nice and if it stands the quality of the other products it's worth it's price.
I may buy one later, but also need to save up for it. And you need free space

Fanatec also has a wheelstand which is a lot cheaper than the whole cockpit.

But i give you few other choices for a full cockpit, but it may not fit in your budget:

Pay attention to the shipping cost and tax

I would recommend the Obutto Ozone cockpit over a Playseat Evolution. I owned an Obutto before building my own cockpit from scratch, and it's a fine rig.

;)

Yup, I wouldn't recommend Playseat. Too wobbly. But DIY is always best, as you can see from DR's response. :sly:

👍

👍

Didn't mean it the bad way, just after driving with zero cross directional movement it has been feeling like it wobbles everytime I've tried. Also has imo little vertical movement, but that can be in right amounts also a good thing. 👍 The point is not to have any cross dir. one. 👍

Obutto is a great choice.
Don't know if they have already holes in the support plates for hard mounting, but that is not a problem.

System, I have to agree with others here for a complete cockpit on your budget the 2 best choices are going to be between the Obutto or the Playseat Evo. I personally have a Playseat evo and love it for its adjustablitly. The wheel can be positioned just about anywhere up and down/forward and back with little limitation. The wheel can also be tilted to your desired angle. It is true that it may wobble a degree or two from left to right but is not noticable in my opinion. The Obutto looks nice as well and I have heard lots of good things about them. Price wise they are very similar if purchased new so do your research and find out which is best for you.

Inside Sim Racing's YouTube channel has a review of the Obutto rig near the end of episode 41. The also mention doing reviews of other cockpits like the Playseat, and Bob Earl Racing VRC. They are a great resource for video reviews on all things sim racing.

As far as wheels go, I have had 2 Logitech G25's and also have a Fanatec Porsche Turbo S wheel and can say both are great choices. I like the Fanatec wheel and pedals a little more, but like the G25 shifter better. Fanatec has a Clubsport shifter in the works so that may be the new best shifter around. Inside sim racing also has reviews on all these wheels. So if you do some research you can find what fits your needs the most.
