Hi there everyone. Long time lurker here, former GT5 player! After being in xbox land for a while, I've decided to try and get another Playstation 3 and play me some GT5! I haven't been able to buy it yet since we just moved a month ago,

But i'm hoping to find me a backwards compatible PS3 soon. (As crazy as it sounds!!)

It's been a while since i've been part of a gaming forum, but i hope to meet new friends here.:)

Welcome to :gtplanet:! Hope you get another PS3 soon! Have a look around this site, and I'm sure you'll find an interest in alot of what this site has to offer. :sly:👍

If I recall, only the very first version of the PS3 was able to play PS2 games, correct? I've had basically every version except for the first, and I wasn't able to play PS2 games on any of them.

Although I sure do like to pop in Gran Turismo 2 every now and then. :dopey:👍

There were several models of PS3 that had PS2 compatibility. Some did it with hardware, some with software. I'm not sure if any had "perfect" compatibility with no glitches or games that wouldn't work, though.

I think, but can't say for sure, that the last version to have it was the 80-gig "fat" model bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4 which was the first PS3 I bought - and which now sits dead with no power and a component exploded on the mainboard... and half my PS2 saves locked within. Luckily I still have a PS2 so I didn't lose that collection of games entirely. I even managed to make my GT3 RS wheel work with it.

I'm not sure if they all can, but at least most PS3s will in fact play PS1 games(as I guess you know if you play GT2 now and then). So that means they are backwards-compatible, although what most people want when they say that is PS2 compatibility.

Thank you guys for taking care of that question haha! Indeed, it seems like just yesterday when PS3 had backwards compatibility... most of the 60 and 80 Gigabyte consoles i've seen on ebay have had technical issues... my original 60 gigabyte PS3got the YLOD (yellow light of death) in 2011 after being owned since 2007.
I might just get a cheap Playstation 2 for Gran Turismo 4 and some other titles i wanna try if i decide to get one of those new super slim Playstation 3s.

Welcome, Harvey! and hope you enjoy your stay at GTPlanet.

BTW - are you a pooka that's six foot, three and half inches tall?

Welcome to :gtplanet:

I have one of those backwards compatible PS3's. I'm not sure if it's limited edition but it's a 160GB launch model.

You should avoid the super slim, I've heard nothing good about them. I had to get a replacement PS3 a couple of months ago and I've found the slim I got fantastic. 👍
