Importing a car ?

I was jsut wondering if anyone new a site where i can Import cars from Japan into the US. and also how much it would cost to import a Lancer EVO VIII into the US ??? HELP!!

You want to import an EVO VIII? They sell those in the US already. Just head down to your local Mitsubishi dealership.

I'm going to go ahead and save time by assuming you made a mistake and you're really talking about the EVO VII or EVO VI.
Motorex (http://www.motorex.net/) imports cars from Japan, mostly skylines, but they could probably get you a Lancer. Another company is http://www.jdmevolution.com/. Their site isn't fully up yet, but from what I've heard, they're going to be importing Silvia's, Skyline's, Lancer's and WRX's. I don't know if you could legalize an EVO (Pre-EVO VIII) for street use in the US, but you'd have to look into it.

It's not really worth it to import the JDM version. You'd probably be better off buying a USDM version and using the extra money (money that'd you save from not having to ship a car accross the Pacific Ocean) to modify the car. That's just my opinion, but do what you like.

If this is your first car, don't get an EVO, you'd probably kill yourself. Get yourself something that's not so fast for your first car, drive it for a few months or a year or so, then get your EVO. If you decide that you have to get an EVO for your first car, save the car and...

EVO isn't a ferrari or anything, im sure an average driver can handle it.

I think you underestimate how fast the EVO is, but that's beside the point.

Could the average driver handle an EVO? Probably.
Could a 16 year old who's getting one for a first car handle an EVO? Probably not.
I'm not saying he couldn't drive one. All I'm saying is that it's a fast car and a teenager who's getting one for a first car is probably going to drive it faster than they should with their level of skill. Why do you think insurance is so expensive for 16-25 year old males?

Yes, fine, it's faster. However, it will only run on 100RON unleaded fuel, and where can you get that in the US?

And before you say it doesn't matter, STI Imprezas have a worrying tendency to go bang when they're run on 95RON. What is the standard for petrol in the US anyway?

Yeah - go down to your local professional race track everytime you want to fill up. Sounds like one hell of a plan!

if i had an evo when i started driving at 17 i am 90% sure i'd be dead by now. i had many close shaves with my 12 year old FF 1.3 litre car. if i had an evo and the police hadn't caught me for speeding i'd have lost control somewhere.

get something crap, put the money on a high interest account, after 3 or 4 years that 40g's will be 50g's and u can get urself a skyline... or something else and fully appreciate a good car. not to mention u'll have mastered clutch control and wont f-ck ur good car up

Nightmage82 is right. If you get a very fast car for your first car, chances are that you will crash or die. let me ask you sometihng.... Have you seen the fast and the furious?
I think what you are trying to do is imate what they do, with an evo, then a skyline, a viper etc....
An evo is WAY too powerful to learn to drive on.
Sure, it might seem cool speeding ahead of people and changing gears fast, but it is better to learn first than hurt yourself.

And the second thing that Nightmage82 is right too.
If you get yourself a ****ty car to learn on, then put money in a hig intrest account for 3-5 years, by the time you learn to drive and then take the money out you will have about 30k t0 50k depending how much you put in their in the first place.
And with that you can get you self a nice car, maybe an evo, which you will be able to drive safely.

IF It were a skyline itd have to be the R34 and thats a lil more then 50 g's my friend but anyways at 16 i can handle an EVO i ahve driven it many times and find it a very fun car to drive

A lot. If you want the most performance, you'd be better off buying the US Spec EVO and sinking in the extra money as opposed to just having a stock JDM Spec EVO.

I don't think it's insane to have an EVO as your first car (As long as money isn't an issue). As long as you can handle it, who cares. It's isn't like it is a TVR Speed 12.

Just be careful at first. If you dont want to be seen by other people when your trying to get the hang of it, go to an empty parkinglot and practice shifting. I have had experience in karting, so it was a little easier for me to get the hang of it, just a few things were different. There is a kid down the block that has an evo 8 as his first car but he is 18 and practiced driving in his parents van. He does alright. Just practice in a pos first...

👍 thanks for the support,
i think klostrophobic slightly underestimates what the evo can do.
and if u don't think 10g's can improve the evo dramatically well then u need to investigate a little more. if u don't spend the money on neon lights and stickers, and put the 10g's into the engine, u'll have a barnstorming evo that could knock the pants off 99% of cars on the road.

but like a lot of people are saying, get something crap first. and we don't mean that it will be crap, just slower in comparison to an evo.

this will let you firstly get to grips with a car and make driving become subconsious, which lets u focus on more important things like braking zones and racing lines. and secondly (which follows on) you will appreciate the evo much more and be able to get 100% of its power out of it. u will probably also master the evo faster if you start on a less powered car first.

You must have some really nice parents... 16 year old with 40g's to spend on first car...

Ive seen an 18-19 year old kill himself in an ITR that his parents bought him. He couldnt control it at the speed he was going and went off road into a ditch and flipped a few times. And since it's a Honda product, he died. You'll have about 80 hp more from a turbo car, not considering you may be adding a bigger turbo with the extra money you got left... In the end its your choice. Do as you wish.

You can't import an Evo, just like that. I'm not even sure if a JSpec evo is legal over here.

And for cars that can be imported....

You can get a standard, non GT-R skyline, for about 12K used in japan. But it's another 3-5000 to ship it here, and the big one, between $10,000 - $15,000 To register and legalize the car. Additionally, the Skyline is the only car that can be legalized with RHD. Any other has to have the drive side swapped to LHD.

Not really. I'm well aware of what 270 or so horses can do. I'm just saying that it isn't out of the realm of possibility that a 16 year old can handle it.
