My dad is planning to get an Android tablet, and wants one that has both a MicroHDMI port and a MicroSD slot. He looked at the Nexus 10 and and a Sony Xperia, but the problem is that one of them has the one thing and the other tablet has the other, and can't find a tablet that has both slots. Does anyone know of any Android tablets that have both a MicroHDMI port and a MicroSD slot, not one or the other?

If you are looking at the Xperia Z tablet (or Z2) they both have mhl built into them, allowing you to output video via the micro usb port on the tablet. You also have the option of miracast for wireless screen mirroring to a tv. I would say the rise in popularity of those two options has caused MicroHDMI ports to be less common.

What's MHL? Does the Xperia Z/Z2 have a MicroSD slot? And is there a specific group of TVs that support MHL? Our TV does have multiple HDMI inputs, if that matters.

My Motorola Xoom has both, but it's pretty dated now.

Although I got a bit of use out of the HDMI port at first, I haven't used it in ages. Mostly because I have two computers, a BluRay player, and a Chromecast connected to the same TV. Not to mention the internet too (it's a smart TV).

Similarly even though I have a 32GB micro SD card plugged into it all the time, I hardly ever use that either. You can mostly blame that on Dropbox though, I think.

So you may wish to rethink if you really need those features.

The Tablet Z and the Tablet Z2 both have MicroSDHC slots. Tablet Z supported 64 GB, so the Z2 will undoubtedly support at least that; but probably 128 GB (which is pretty much unobtainium at the moment) too like the newest Samsung tablets/phones. Even though I decided against upgrading to a Z2 a couple months ago and instead went to a Galaxy Tab S, both the Tablet Z and the Tablet Z2 are pretty close to the top of the line as far as Android tablets go; and you can undoubtedly get a pretty good deal on the original Z at this point (though the Z2 is superior as far as design goes, it's really just a refining of the things the original Z did). Sony also updated the Tablet Z to KitKat a few months ago, though I'm doubtful that it will also get any big Android L update in the future. Just keep in mind that to connect anything to the Tablet Z you need to be mindful of the plug doors.

MHL is essentially an adapter plug that looks like this:

That plugs into the MicroUSB port, and you plug your AC adapter or wall charger and HDMI cable into that. They are cheap as hell on eBay (probably cheaper than a MicroHDMI plug would be). You just have to make sure you don't get one for a Samsung phone because those ones aren't compatible with anything that isn't a Samsung device.

But I'm not the one who's getting a tablet. Also, this MHL thing might be a reasonable idea.

And my dad seems to be okay with this. Since these adapters seem to be easier to find than a tablet with any direct HDMI connection, he'll just get one of these things and whatever tablet that he wants.

Will 8" tablet be fine? If so, I think a Nvidia Shield Tablet will be a good buy out of current Android tablets out there. Nexus 9 will be coming out soon which will have 64 bit dual core version of the Nvidia Tegra K1 with Android L OS so should be the more power efficient and more powerful tablet but I doubt it will have Micro SD support. Maybe there will be more tablets coming out using the same chip though and also Qualcomm should also be releasing more powerful and power efficient chips potentially as soon as maybe end of this year or early next year.

I don't think it matters. It doesn't to me, since the tablet isn't for me. My dad is the one buying it, and he'll make his own decision on what tablet to get. I only made this thread to find a tablet that has two specific features he wants, and we've found a solution, which is the MHL adapter mentioned in an earlier post. Thanks though.

The Nvidia Shield Tablet has Micro SD and Mini HDMI so no need for MHL adapter. Seems like it is also very good value for money as at the moment the most powerful Android tablet you can buy.
