Seeing how everyone's talking about states and favorite countries and all, this came into my mind.

The thread title says it all; what do you like about the country you live in the most, and what's the thing you dislike the most?

What I like about Canada: Vancouver

What I dislike about Canada: The rest of the country. :D

*dodges snowballs, runs away*

I should keep my mouth shut.

I can think of a lot of minuses, and few pluses. Let's just say that I try not to be an average American and I want out of here as soon as I can.

Best thing about my country-- we have a lot of freedom relative to the rest of the world.

Worst thing about my country-- we don't have enough freedom, we're paying out the ass in the name of it, and what freedom we have is always trying to be taken away by someone or some group. ;)

The states can be so strange.

What I like about Canada? Hot canadian chicks! Besides that I'd say it'd be the diversity that Canada has aswell.

What do I hate? Shoveling snow, but the snow makes for some fun so it evens it out.

What I like best about the U.S.: Freedom.

What I don't like: Off the top of my head, what bothers me the most at this moment is the criminal justice system.

Criminal justice? Whatever. The civil courts are even more amusing. I love it when people sue a company because they're an idiot and don't realize it.

That's my least favorite part about America. Stupid people.

Best thing about my country-- we have a lot of freedom relative to the rest of the world.

Worst thing about my country-- we don't have enough freedom […]
Yup.

Other than that, about the only things I wish we had are four-stage stoplights (a red-amber stage before the green), and roundabouts.

While I do love my country just as much as any other American should, I think the thing I hate the most is just how stupid people can be, and furthermore, how it never gets them in trouble. I mean sure, there is an acceptable level of stupidity for most people... I don't expect every American to be able to list the checks and balances of the federal government, be able to spot Togo on a map, and know what the difference between a Persian and a Arab is...

...But just being informed would be great. Even a basic, simple, level of understanding of just what the hell is going on would be awesome...

A short list of stupid that I hate about America:

- Not voting
- Ineffective Congress and President
- Poor State and Local governments
- Religious Illiteracy
- Social Illiteracy

...Just to name a few...

Bing-o.

What i hate about Belgium:
- High taxes on everything they can think of
- Almost no room for (offroad) motorsports
- the weather

What i love about Belgium:
- the weather
- hummm....

I'll name a few dislikes about Canada:
-High taxes, both income and sales (Fourteen point freaking five percent).
-Overwhelmed healthcare system (It may be "free", but you can end up having to wait for a long time to get looked at/cut open/fixed otherwise)
-Not having a political party I agree with on more than half the issues at hand

Likes:
-It's Canada!!!
-Many freedoms
-The ability to boat, hike, race, go quadding (etc), and ski all within a four hour radius of my home.

What I love about my current residence? The freedom to go ass-out at noon-time on the highway and not worry about a ticket. The freedom to walk nearly naked in public and not get arrested if you're not a sexy girl. The freedom to act like an asshole whenever you like.

What I hate? The fact that people actually do these things... ugh, put that thing away, man!

-----

What I like: Cheap gas. As in really cheap. Lots of places to drive.

What I hate: Low salaries means you're still paying through the nose for gas. Damn traffic.

yup.

The post. I ordered a Villeneuve shirt the other day, and now the post office is on strike for a week

I've also had 2 model cars stolen in the post.

On the upside, I just got a detention letter dated 15 march 2006 :D

I might just have missed it.

AUSTRIA
Worst things:
* European Union; people didnt want to be in the European Union; we had two negative surveys but our government didnt care and said ''shut up, it does not matter what you say anyway, we want to be in the EU. ''
* Outer-control government that doesnt not care about their people, the do what they want. Democracy? Haha, good joke. Government just patronizes us like a small baby, we cant decide what we want, the governent does it for us anyway.
* Tight and unnecessary laws, like cars must have lights turned on at daytime, strange gun laws, property laws etc.
* No freedom at all, everything is restricted with laws, even the most banal things, I bet tomorrow we have laws about pooping and sleeping.
* You cant own any land, the church and the country owns all of it.
* Horrible maladministration in the government.

Good things:
* Good healthcare industry
* Good Infrastructure
* No war since WWII and neutrality *

* EU screws up our neutrality for sure.

I guess that what I most like in my country is the weather. Not in my town though, it's in a valley so it's very moisty and hot. I also like that there's no earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes and all that crap some other countries have.

What I most dislike in Brazil is the corruption everywhere. We also pay a lot of taxes for everything, more than any other country I think.

I was going to add my gripes on the UK to the thread. But Michael's got most of them already.

*I have no personal grudge against outsiders coming into the UK,*
but our government has seriously messed up with the immigration laws.

In my part of the country alone there have been nearly 900,000 'legal' immigrants.
Most earn a low wage in thier own countries, so they come to the UK and take all the avaiilable jobs.
To make it worse there are nearly 1 Million 'illegal' immigrants doing the same thing.

Of these people many drive cars, some from thier own countries, and because they are not
fully aware of our road laws, they are not taxed for the road or insured.
Lack of insurance for illegals with no fixed abode cost my father a one-year old £19k Saab.
Although the fault was the of the Yugoslav driver, the blame lies within our laws.

Therefore the UKs biggest problem is our government and the 'Politically Correct' laws.

So as you can see its a love hate relationship. Love the UK if you plan on being a lazy layabout as you get everything you require by the government regardless. If you are a criminal never mind if you get caught cause you will only get a slap on the wrist in this country. Plus the incentive to not be a criminal is no longer there. Who needs a clean record to help get a job when you dont need a job in the first place. The government hands everything out for free.

NHS...Good if you have no money, its not like you are gonna complain about something you dont pay for.

But if you do work all those things listed above seriously piss you off.

Why should I pay 30% or 40% tax so the lazy scum get the above and I get a lacklustre service.

I hate the UK. Labour has ruined it. Im moving to australia.

So you are saying you earn more than £33k a year are you? That's just about the only way you are going to be paying 40% tax....

UK Tax rates
Starting rate 10% on earnings up to £2,150
Basic rate 22% on earning between £2,151 and £33,300
Higher rate 40% on earnings over £33,300

....as someone who's earnings do hit that top bracket then yes I can confirm it does hurt, however your little diatribe above does sound rather like a UKIP speech. Overall UK tax rates are on the low side for Europe (go buy a car in Denmark if you don't believe me - 105%, rather different to our 17.5%).

Its funny because jails are currently as full as they have even been in the UK, and while I would agree that immigration is an issue, to then tar all immigrants with the same brush is simply ignorant. My mother-in-law came to the UK in the 1950's from India, she worked from the day she arrived here until she retired a few years ago, paid taxs, etc and has always been actively involved in the community she lives in. During that time she has also suffered numerous racial attacks (both verbal and physical) and quite honestly comments such as your above I'm not exactly happy with (as you seem to be saying that all immigrants are a problem in the UK), as someone who emigrated to the UK exactly how is she (and others like her) one of the worst things about this country?

I also hope that you apply your dislike of immigrants to those of British origin who move abroad and I also hope that you see the irony of moaning about immigrants and then saying you want to move to Australia (which would make you what exactly?). Blanket statement such as the one you have made above are potentially offensive and as such I would take care with exactly how you word them.

I also take it as you seem to dislike the NHS so much you pay for private medical cover for all your ills, personally I have no problem with paying for the services the NHS provide.

Now don't take the above as an endorsement of the current government, but to single out any party as incompetent I would not agree with. I grew up in the '80s and can assure you the Tories are just as capable of the same level of daftness.

For me the best things about the UK are the sheer variety of the place, from the rolling downs around me, to the highlands and islands of Scotland, and the valleys of Wales. That and we are still arguably the motorsport capital of the world.

Things I dislike about the UK are the manner in which shotgun and firearms legislations have changed, stupid and ignorant people (of any nature and origin) and how successive governments have used partisan politics to effectively damage this country.

So anyway... :D Dutch taxes are flipping insane, my parents actually moved across the border to Belgium because of it.

Think 42% registration cost on cars, 60% income.

Let me go a bit more in detail as to what I like and dislike about this country.

Firstly my Grandfather came to the UK in the 50's or 60's. He like your mother in law worked until he retired. He was also subject to racial abuse and attacks etc. Same thing with my own father. Came to the country as a boy, at 17 joined the army and had a job since he was 12. My mother herself is a Immigrant being born in Germany, and infact I myself am a immigrant as I was born in germany also, as my father met my mother whilst serving in Germany.

My whole family are immigrants. However although I know im a immigrant as such I see myself as British. I have made Britain my home and feel very welcome. In all of the 3 countries that I have lived in I made each of them my home at the time, even when I was in germany were people were nowhere as friendly as the british.

Heres the thing though. At one point I was proud to say that London was the multi-cultural capital of the world, but over the last 5 years things have slowly changed to what they are now. Quite frankly and this remember coming from a mixed white and black person, there are not enough white faces in London anymore. Go into any primary and secondary school and it is infact the white children that are in the minority. Went to oxford street and most the shoppers up there arent even talking in english! All the building sites I have been on dominated by eastern european workers. I have dozens of friends who want to get into the construction industry and get an apprenticeship but there are hardly any about. Competetion for them is fierce. Before young men would be able to get work on building sites but these days tehre is no need thanks to cheap eastern eurpean labour. Our own kids are quite frankly loosing out.

More and more people are driving without tax and insurance, and in london the biggest culprits are supposedly africans and eastern europeans.

I used to work for a major maintenance firm in London. I worked on council estates, council offices, hostels etc. The majority of people living in hostels were immigrants, and the majority did not seem to have a job, but yet instead managed to have 2 or 3 young children in the time that they arrived in the UK. Make of that what you wish. In one of the council offices where people went for free accomodation were full of immigrants.

Not all immigrants are bad, and it seems to me that a few races seem to take the p*ss out of the country more than others.

Im just saying there has been this huge influx of immigrants, but I dont see a huge influx in the number of houses, hospitals, jails and schools being built. House prices are high enough as it is without some work shy immigrant coming over and the council having to buy them a £500 grand house to fit the family in. Now its not just immigrants, I know that british people do this aswell, but it just takes the p*ss more when they are not even a british citizen.

I hate it when I used to go to work on the tube and trains. Walking to the tube/train station I would have slow walking immigrants block the way. But once you reched the station and the train/tube arrived all of a sudden they are extra keen to get on and push their way to the front of the queue.

Anyway enough ranting let me talk some sense.

What the government needs to do is stop giving out leanient jail sentences for major crimes, send back any immigrant that commits crime in this country, cut benefits, increase incentive to behave and follow the british way of life. People who self inflict themselves with injury due to booze or drugs should have to pay for treatment.

This country is in trouble. Inflation is going up, cost of living is going up, stealth taxes increasing, but yet labour carry on decieving the naive that the UK economy is booming.

And whilst all this is happeneing the current generation of teen and early 20 somethings are cacking it. How are they supposed to be able to afford to buy a house. Everything costs more year by year but their pay packets dont follow suite?

People always mention the tories and the 80's but what they seem to forget is that the whole world was in a economic downturn, and just as the labour party got control from the tories the economy was back on its way up. Labour did us well for about 5 years, but then it all got too much. Too much PC crap, not enough common sense.

I do not yet earn 33k a year but in the next two years will have surpassed that figure. Not only will I have to stubbornly fork over 40%, there is also N.I contributions, council tax, road tax etc. It just annoys me that I will pay all this money to the government, and then at teh same time someone find the money to cough up for a 350k mortgage, with the icing on the cake being that my neighbors also living in a 350k house could very well be on benefits, workshy and have everything paid for by me and the other tax payers.

I mean what kind of government gives people who dont work because they dont want to a house thats brand new

The NHS is currently struggling. Its under funded with extrovert expectations. It wasnt too bad at one point but the population of London itself has increased dramtically over the past 5 years. I do have a private healthcare scheme, and the same goes with my pension. Trust the government to my healthcare and pension when they are proven to be incompetent over and over again? Yeah right.

This country is only good if you are poor and workshy, or rich. Those inbetween, the majority, are getting shafted.

P.S

I cant really think of anything good about the UK being working class.

Likes: Lack of gun crime; no killer insects; proximity of stuff (no wide open spaces over here).

Dislikes: Price of car insurance; driving age; price of everything; public toilets; chavs.

That just about sums it up, really.
