Hi guys, sort of bored today so was thinking of starting a discussion. Could be an interesting one though. Got two videos of indianopolis onboard GT 5 and IRACING - more or less similar cars - (I know quite different but best I could get). I was very pleased with how GT portrays the track and the "driver cocpit feeling" when compared to Iracing ( which by many is considered the holy grail of PC sims) Have never played it but it s a serious simulator for sure. Many people have moaned about the unimpressive looks of GT 5 Indianopolis but from my perspective it looks at least as good even beter and less "boring" than IRACING version. Which one is more true to life I cant say - unfortenetly don t have a good quality real life video of cocpit view from a simmilar car. Also once again I am happy that the GT cocpit doesnt have this floaty lifeless effect that many people did not like about Prologue. The cocpit view jolts and shakes very nicely. What are your impressions?:)

Not really sure about the track perfection in GT5, but I don't like the iRacing video, it looks like a bad cartoon and the visual physics in cockpit are less than believable. GT5 looks much more real from all visual standpoints.

It's interesting to see the difference between the track interpretations. The bit between turn 8 and 9 is very different.

Yet, iRacing's version of the track is laser scanned which means it should not be wrong...

Yep, thanks for posting the real thing. Except for the fact that the F1 camera is slightly higher and everythinngs goes by like crazy the GT 5 track is amazingly similar in shape details and colour. I don t want to bash IRACING but seriously (at least in my opinion) this round goes to GT 5. I even prefer the cocpit movement of GT 5 but could be because I m used to it. Nevertheless GT 5 seems closer to reality:) but as mentioned before ever played IRACING.

The track has changed. iRacing has the current configuration, laser scanned for accuracy. GT5 has the old version, not sure if they laser scan or go off plans and gps.

The bump map that iracing has for its tracks is the stand out feature. The cars run on the laser scanned bump map of the track, rather than a few arbitrary bumps that the devs put in.

Also note that indy now has a reverse run Moto GP track - that is also on the iracing scan, but not in gt5 as far as im aware (although i havent gone looking for the bit before the pit lane entrance that snakes all over the track.).

No matter how bad the graphics are (and the sound, especially with F1 cars) I have always had a soft spot for both iRacing and rFactor. With that being said, I think that the GT5 interpretation is a lot funner, far better looking and more realistic from what I have seen.

the track was modifed in 2007-08 for Red Bull Indianapolis GP (bikes) which is what was scanned in 2009 by iRacing. The turns in the GT version are no longer there.

You are wrong though, the layout in the Academy demo is still correct, the MotoGP drives the track in the opposite direction plus a couple of more corners, the F1 layout is exactly like in the GT5 demo.

EDIT: The only thing thats different in iRacing is the chicane at the end and i dont know if they ever changed it.

Yes but the current Indianapolis track is different from GT5. Those corners aren't there in GT5's version. Not that I care.

Which corners?
The pic in the post i quoted shows the MotoGP layout, in the demo is the F1 layout.

Yes but the corners added to the motoGP track are not shown in the GT5 TT, this means that it was modeled on the old layout. So although it is the correct "layout" for F1, the track is not the current one. (Also the chicane is different)

Turns 9 & 10 seem to be whole different in iRacing :ill:

Yah, like the others, I noticed that right away. Just so we're all on the same page here, the GT layout is the obsolete F1 track. Having recently been on the race course (as a pedestrian, thank you), it was different than the F1 layout, which can still been seen (as well as the F1 barrier & the tree from the old course 4th tee box, both of which are noticeably absent in the iRacing version) very well on Google maps , whereas the iRacing clearly has the current MotoGP configuration seen here.

Never played iRacing, but have heard how accurate they tried to make the tracks; still, it would appear the 9/10 complex isn't accurate, as it appears either too tight for the MGP or too open for the F1 circuits.

IndianApolis.

haha 👍

The iRacing version of Indianapolis is accurate. It's running the new-ish MotoGP layout (with the turns 9-10 hairpins removed) in reverse and running the banked curve rather than the new turns 1-4. This iRacing screenshot clearly shows the new section used by the MotoGP circus.
