IndyCars in GT5?

We've seen a field of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock cars lined up on pit road at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the new E3 trailer. You can't have the Indianapolis Motor Speedway without the IndyCars that made the track famous! How about a series of at least 10 IndyCar Series races in Simulation Mode featuring the Indianapolis 500 @ Indianapolis Motor Speedway?

Note: Ideally, I'd love to see the full 2009 IndyCar Series schedule in GT5, but I'd be happy with a few IndyCars and a 10 race IndyCar Series.

We've had ice racers (GT2) with no ice tracks and ice tracks (GT4) with no ice racers. Dragsters (GT2) with no drag strip and drag strips (GT4) with no dedicated drag cars. Daytona (GT5:P) with no NASCAR (until now) or Daytona Prototypes. I would'nt count on having IndyCars just because we've been shown Indianapolis MS.

Tony George owns both Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IRL IndyCar Series. I don't see any reason why he and his company would let PD put IMS in GT5 without also convincing PD to put IndyCars in GT5.

It depends on whether IndyCars has an exclusive license with some other developer or not.

The IRL has not granted an exclusive license to thier IndyCars to any developer. PD is free to put IndyCars in GT5 if they pay the IRL (and possibly Dallara and Honda) the licensing fees.

I didn't think they existed anymore. Didn't they merge back with IRL last season?

The Champ Car World Series merged with the IRL IndyCar Series last year. The IRL now owns the rights to Champ Car/CART stats/history so they could theoretically get PD to put past CC/CART IndyCars in GT5 if they wanted to. Of course, PD may also need to pay the respective chassis/engine manufacturers licensing fees for various IndyCars.

The CART/CC vs IRL war ended over a year ago! Do we really need to re-open old wounds? What's wrong with having both today's IndyCars and past IndyCars in GT5?

Nothing at all. Especially as you pointed out in a previous post that Tony George owns the rights to the IRL so it would make sense for him to try and boost awareness of the series in any deal with PD to get the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the game.

As long as it has both I don't mind, but if it does have Champ Cars the Indycars won't get much of a look in!

Indycars are a must now

Just like how we needed proper stock cars to race on Daytona, we need proper openwheel cars to race on Indy now

I can't imagine the IRL license being that expensive.

Also an Indycar would be a break from the F1, I've always wanted slower openwheel cars in GT5. The F1 is just too fast at times

Indianapolis is part of the NASCAR calender right? PD have clearly got the NASCAR license and are using it in GT5 right? The NASCAR license will cover all the cars, drivers, liveries and tracks used for whichever season PD has lisensed and it's upto PD to pick if they want everything (doubtfull for GT5) or if they just want to pick and choose a selection of them. Indy cars may appear in GT5, but Indianapolis being in GT5 proves nothing.

IndyCars are actually faster than F1 cars in terms of top speed. :D

In the game the Indycar will have more weight and less aero then the F1, which would be great as it will put more control in the driver's hands and not in the car.

I would like some open wheel trainers or mazda atlantic series openwheel cars as well, slower openwheel cars

Now that PD added NASCAR, nobody can really say this or that racing series won't make it in.

At the worst I expect Indycars to be added via DLC after GT5's release. I haven't checked but I don't think an Indycar game has been made in a while nor is one being planned, so this is an excellent opportunity for PD

they said the same thing about the NASCAR photo used in the prerace show :D

To DaveA: NASCAR doesn't own the rights to the tracks they race at. PD would have to pay licensing fees to the tracks.

And how often would they achieve that around here...

I'm not a big fan of any form of oval or drag based motorsport but I sure as hell want them in GT5! More more more is what I say. :)

Not sure if a NASCAR license would cover tracks as well. They're all generally owned by other parties and their likeness of each one will probably have to be licensed out by those owners.

To phillookswasted: F1 cars run too much downforce to hit 230 MPH in race conditions. F1 engines also cannot maintain high RPMs on an oval. It would be nice if PD included that much realism. I'd love to see someone enter a F1 car into an Indy 500 online only to have it blow its engine before the race ends. :D

Just going slightly off topic. But yes, we have tyre degradation in certain races. It would be good to also see brake fade and engine reliability issues. Most road cars wouldn't last 3 laps of hard circuit work before they're brakes began to boil and all those highly tuned Supra's and Skylines with 800+bhp would probably 'grenade' their engines after a couple of laps too.

Now that's what I call proper damage.

What do IRL cars rev to?

I'm not saying your're wrong about NASCAR owning the licenses to the tracks but who owns the tracks themselves doesn't automatically mean they NASCAR doesn't. The FIA don't own the tracks F1 cars race on but they own licenses for them so I'm assuming that would be the case here, it would seem not from the replies I got though.

I still stand by the point of my post, Indianapolis bein gin GT5 doesn't mean anything in relation to Indy cars being in too. They might, but not just because Indianapolis is in and certainly not because the owner of a track wouldn't sell them the rights unless they bought inthe Indycar license. Short of them already planning on getting the Indycar license anyway I think they'd just find a different track.

No i agree, PD having the license to use the Indy circuit doesn't mean we'll definitely see Indy or Champ cars at all. But it's certainly a big step in that direction. :)
