First off, bear with me if this is old news to you.

I caught this news bit on another site. It concerns the start of filming for the upcoming Initial D (live action) movie:

Tsui Hark not on Initial D
Peter Lam, chairman of Media Asia Group, has announced that Andrew Lau and Alan Mak will indeed be replacing Tsui Hark to direct Initial D, claiming schedule conflicts as the reason. Felix Chong is now re-working the script. Shooting starts in Japan this April.

Shooting of Initial D is being delayed due to conflicts between Tsui Hark and Media Asia Group. First, there is a disparity of some HK$10 million between the two's proposals on the production budget. Tsui Hark wants the movie to be as grandiose as possible and to film the car races on actual locations - primarily Japan and Europe - as depicted in the comics. However, this would require a hefty budget which Media Asia Group is hesitant to fork out. Secondly, the script is heading in two directions. Media Asia Group wants the movie to be commercially viable, while Tsui Hark insists on making it according to his filming language and style. Thirdly, while they are basically in agreement on the male cast Jay Chou, Edison Chan, Shawn Yue and Anthony Wong, they are again in dissent on the female lead.

Owing to many disputes, the studio decided to push shooting from February to March, with no date fixed, contingent on how the issue develops. Media Asia Group declined comment on what it would do should the controversies remain unresolved, but some top-dog privately revealed that the director would be changed if the worst comes to the worst.

No! No! No! What starts as anime should remain anime. No live action, regardless of who would make it, what series it'd be off.
Anime series are only mocked like hell when they turn into real life.

I love the Initial D series, but I'm gonna have to agree with Sleek here.............. ;)

I know, i think real drifts looks better and you never know, it might turn out good, plus i heard the script is going to be like the BATTLE STAGE DVD, lets hope so and i just want to see the real life cars and the twin drifting in mountains, that would be F*#kin great...

I agree that it would be really difficult to recreate the energy of the anime.

But the biggest problem that I see is that one battle in the anime takes upwards of 20 minutes (guesstimate), where a battle on Haruna, Akagi, or Myogi would take a fraction of that.

If you cut down the battle time, then it becomes slightly harder to build the drama.

Is Andy Lau not in this movie anymore? A while back I heard that he was going to be Bunta or something. Actually I don't think he fits the role too well...

I hadn't heard any news discussion him, but I do remember mention of his name in the context of the movie a long time ago.

I havnt even seen Initial D. theres only 2 released that i know of on the Gold Coast and when ever i go to hire them, theyre out. The only 2 that i know of are the one with the AE86 on the cover and the one with the yellow FD.

Because I took time out of my working life to watch the series, and I don't remember watching that.

Yes you are completely right, in the series they do not race in Europe. Maybe in 4th stage they will, but it has not happened in the previous 3 stages...........

Oh, and, BMW318_DRIFTER, Don't get those versions.... You need to get the original versions online, from Japan (English subtitles). Trust me, TokyPop raped the series when they dubbed it in English. They changed the music, names, and even the translations, to make it apeal more to the American audience.... So whatever you do, do not support Tokyo Pop by buying that uselss DVD. Get the originals, they are much better, and you can find 1 full season on 3 DVD's, instead of waiting for the stupid Toky Pop ones to come out.....

But there might not be any real drifts in the "real world", instead camera tricks or, worse, blatant computer-generated **** like 2 Fast 2 Furious.
