I have always been fascinated from history and the fact that there is just so much of it that no one can learn all of it in a lifetime. But at least one can attempt. So, I came up with this proposal:

-Each week, we select one event in history that is interesting, yet not common knowledge (so yes, the bulk of World War II wont be in our discussions)

-I will make an OP stating the some information about the subject that I have researched or already know.

-Members can do some research on the subject, and come back with what they have found.

-This could spark a discussion that could go pretty much anywhere, as long as it stays on topic.

-We all learn more about the world, and get closer to knowing everything! :P

So... Would anyone be willing to participate in these discussions?

Sounds like this could be interesting. Can you perhaps give an example or two of what sorts of events you have in mind?

I had left school with a distaste for history, because it seemed to have been pretty much a date memorization course. I've since discovered that it can be a fascinating subject.

I love history. Do it. You don't need to set parameters for discussion, though. I would think it'd be best to start out with an event that's breifly outlined, and maybe an opinion on it. Then leave it to the forum to steer the discussion any interesting direction.

Just don't make this thread as an excuse to get people to research your homework for you.

For example:
-Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre
-The Alamo

No. I am simply doing this because I am fascinated in history and I already know 95% of the stuff they teach in history class and I'm interested in learning more.

Also I would like suggestions for each week's topic because I'm not exactly a history encyclopedia.

I think the first topic is going to be the Jonestown Massacre because I have already done alot of research on it and it is quite interesting.

Yep agreed. A topic and brief opinion is all that's needed and then let the thread head in whatever direction it goes.

I'd also suggest pick different things from around the globe if your looking to grab more than just American interest.
