I've always found aviation, and everything associated with it to be quite fascinating
One particular thing which interests me are aircraft noises which don't quite come from the engine, these noises come from different sources such as airframe designs, jet exhausts, intakes, etc. Here I'll share some examples:
Airframe noise examples:
On the Mustang, the sound apparently come from the gun-ports on the wings. At a certain speed range, the air rushing inside vibrates at a particular frequency, effectively acting like a pipe-organ.
Now, what's really interesting is that the Lancair 360, which doesn't have any gun ports, also makes a similar sound![Odd :odd: :odd:](/wp-content/themes/gtp16/images/smilies/odd.svg)
Exhaust-based aerodynamic noise:
Nothing beats this example better than an F-104 Starfigher:
This sound is common to GE J-79 turbojets and only at particular engine throttle settings, here is a rather thorough explanation and example of how the sound is produced:
The early variants of the F-4 Phantom, which have the same engines, also make a similar howl:
Intake noise/howls
Quite a lot of aircraft make these noises, as vibrations occur in the air intakes (usually around maximum thrust), here are some of the best examples:
And my personal favourite![Drool  ](/wp-content/themes/gtp16/images/smilies/drool.svg?v=3)
So, any other interesting and unique noises from aviation? Coming from the engine/fuel pumps/brakes/anywhere else? Discuss here![Dopey :dopey: :dopey:](/wp-content/themes/gtp16/images/smilies/dopey.svg?v=3)
