Is frame delay a problem with video capturing?

This Christmas, I'm asking for this WinTV PVR system from Hauppauge, because obviously I'd like to get video and TV onto my PC. I'm also asking for Logitech's MOMO Force Wheel. The ultimate goal here is to play GT3 on my PC monitor and speakers, while using my desk as a proper clamp for the wheel. Have any of you tried doing something like this? The only thing that concerns me is the possibility of a slight delay as the video comes through the PC (especially with the particular system I am interested in, which uses USB). Naturally, a delay of a second or so wouldn't affect video capturing or watching TV, but it would be an issue when playing a game because you need instant visual feedback from controller inputs. Is this a problem or something I should worry about? I'm not experienced in working with video on my PC at all, so I would really appreciate any advice you guys might have. :)

I dont think it would be delayed.

By The Way, Are you copying me? I was planning on getting the EXACT same thing. You know, to make GT3 videos! :P

Hummm, that's an interesting Idea. I did something similar with my Canon GL-1, except I was utilizing Firewire. The drawback is that the PS2's resolution was so small, 320x240 I believe that it was horrible to play at 1024x768 resolutions of my monitor's on the PC. As far as latency was concerned, there was none, but the visual experience was much better on my TV than on the computer monitors.

What a coincidence! :)

Uh oh, I hadn't even thought about resolution... :nervous: I suppose all capture devices and a PS2 would have that problem, wouldn't they?

I would assume so. I don't think that the PS2 is HDTV ready, so your max resolution of the source for NTSC would be 320x240. I have seen where people can hook up the PS2 using Componet video, but......I think it's still a 320x240 resolution.

EDITED:

I might add, my GL-1 is capable of 740x460 resolution, but it was still rendered at 320x240. When I brought the resolution up to spec., it was rather blurred and pixelated.

Ahum.

Ok I have a Happauge card as well.

Well you can change the resolution that your card captures in here. Using the wintv 2000 software.

First you need to bring up the remote sidebar thingo by pressing the RC button.

Click the FMT button and this will appear.

As you can see I have mine set to 384x288 which is the default pal resolution. It can be set higher, but my pc doesnt have the grunt for capturing stuff in 740x460 so im not sure how it will come out.

Now the main thing that will probably slow down the capturing process is compression. Turn it to uncompressed and then compress it in a video editing package. Click the file button on the remote sidebar and click the video compression.

By the way uncompressed 2 mins of video takes up about 1gig of space. I find that when capturing compressed video on the fly it drops frames, making the video jerky. You should have no problem playing while capturing. BTW What are you up to?

You havent already opened your christmas prezzies have you Jordan? :P

I really just want to plug my PS2 into the WinTV PVR system, and play GT3 in full-screen glory on my PC monitor and speakers. Capturing and saving the video isn't my main priority (although it is a feature I need, nonetheless).

No, I just know what's near the top of my list! :)
