Is GT4 worth picking up?

I own a PS2 and i have been thinking about picking up GT4 for a long while now. I completely missed the GT bandwagon and have never really played a proper GT game before in my life other then GT5P . Now i own Forza 3, and im having an amazing time on it, its really addicing it and really fun (Please i am just saying that IMO, i dont want any arguements about it) and its made me think, what is GT really like? Now, i really want to see what all the fuzz is about, so im asking will picking up GT4 offer me things that no other racing game does? Are its phyisics second to none still even on the PS2? Do the graphics look good to this day because i heard when it was released it was hands down the best looking game on PS2.

So i ask here because you guys know GT like the back of your hands, and so i thought it would be worth asking. So should i pick up GT4? Or should i stick with Forza 3 untill GT5 is finnaly upon us?

Agian, thanks and i do look forward to seeing the release of GT5 :)

I've tried going back in game series' before and it usually never works (trying tp play FFVII after playing FFX... nightmare to say the least, i hated it for various reasons, mainly because i was spoilt with all the up to date features in FFX), you always get put off by little things that show the games age. But GT4 is still a pretty recent game, the graphics are excellent by PS2 standards and the gameplay is very in depth. If you want the best experience, you will need a wheel and turn all aids off, and use N1 or N2 tyres. Otherwise the game feels... well, like a game, not a simulator. (Although you have just as much fun playing the game on sports/race tyres - it does not equate to realistic physics)

If you are happy with Forza 3 stick with it. You won't find anything new of interest in GT4, My opinion is that Forza 3 is better than GT4.

GT4 does still look good even in it's old age and it's still great fun and offers a great library of cars (some of which are unnecessary and can't be used) and has some of the longest endurance races you'll ever come across (24 heures du Mans, yeah, I went official on you.). However, going from Forza 3 to GT4 there's the possibility you might find yourself bored because GT4 doesn't offer much of the same things FM3 does. For example, the sounds are inferior, no livery editor (no big deal if you don't use it anyway), there's no extensive customization (just rear wings in the GT Auto shop), and well...that's pretty much all that's coming to mind right now. You have night races, rally races, 2 or 3 events on wet tarmac, and driver missions...so there's plenty to do. It's still a great game and has about as much to offer as any PS2 game can offer to you, but I would say....

Stick with FM3 and GT5P as you might find yourself drawing far too many comparisons. If none of that is going to bother you go for it, and pick up 2 and 3 while you're at it - 2 pwns, and while 3 was rushed it's still great as well.

GT2 had one of the best car selections, a lot of which were removed for GT3 and wern't re-introduced for GT4.

But i think that would be a bit extreme. Unless you enjoy playing retro games, don't go back further than GT3.

Agreed with that.

Shenfrey: Like yourself, I picked GT4 up only recently to see what all the fuss (in the past) was about. For the PS2, it's certainly one of the best looking games and its great choice of cars does make it worth picking up for a few $ nowadays. (Whether it was worth its original full asking price is much more debatable, imho.)

If you're used to better technology/physics from GT5P and Forza, I'd follow Seismica's advice and *downgrade* GT4's arcade helpings pronto, like the 'cartoon' S2 tyres it gives you by default, and turn off all the driving aids. Then it does feel a lot better than at its default settings and may not be that much of a disappointment. :dopey: You don't need a wheel, though, the default gamepad will do if you use the analog sticks for steering, even though a wheel will always be best.

It still suffers from partially horrendous AI and botched gameplay, but if you pick and choose the races/cars you find appealing and ignore the rest, you may still find it appealing. Despite its rather large flaws, its large selection of cars and still-decent graphics (pretty amazing for an old 2001 console really) can be fun if you're any kind of car enthousiast at all.

I find hard to play any PS2 games ever since I got a PS3. But I can play PS1 games, they're classics so I can cope with the low quality graphics

its a great game and i would definitly recommend picking it up and i would say the graphics still look pretty good even next to the latest games!

You must realise that going to GT4 after playing Forza 3 is a retrograde step. The consoles are different generation for a start so there will be a consequent reduction in graphical quality and game features. However, GT4 is a massive game and the graphics still hold their own. The range of cars is remarkable and there are so many events that there is something for everyone. I think that (GT5 P aside), GT4 is the benchmark GT release. If you are going to start anywhere in the GT series, GT4 is a good place to start.

I wish I still had my PS2 as I would drive in GT4 more than GT5.
I miss the tracks mostly.

I picked up NFS Shift to get me through till GT5 (and new tracks) but the steering is crap.
GT5P may seem floaty but Shift is way too floaty, especially on the straights. :boggled:
It could be the adjustments but I've tried to find the correct one.........FAIL
As for FM3, I know nothing.

Yes GT4 can feel like GT5P's Standard physics but the sport cars can be very similar to Pro physics.
GT4 has many tracks and you can use Rally cars on tarmac and dirt tracks.
You can have 1080i graphics with a component cord, though I read some where only the NTSC version has it.
I not too sure about that though. Someone else with a PAL copy may clear that up.

I still use GT4 in LAN mode every week and it is great.
GT4 has so much to offer and must be cheap to buy, so buy it.

Visually (you forgot wheels), but there is plenty of tuning options to make monster track cars.

I've no idea how that slipped my mind, there are more wheels in GT4 than in GT1 -3, and FM 1 - 3 combined. Roughly 700+ wheels, not including the ones featured in the shop.

I hope they continue that trend in GT5.

It is. That being said, the NTSC version doesn't really like to run 1080i either.

Actually it does have 1080i (US version, NTSC is what I have),

After playing Forza 3 and not enjoying as much as I thought I would, I decided to buy GT4 again and play it with my PS3 and my new Fanatec Porsche Turbo S wheel, and let me tell you it looks good in
1080i (HDMI CABLE) and it handles great with the Turbo S wheel, plus the FF is 100 times better in GT4 than in FM3.
(forza's 3 Force Feedback is just to weak compared to GT4,GT5P)

I only wished I could use the H shifter and not only the paddles or the sequential shifter but hey is more than enough.

So in conclusion GT4 is a great game and really worth picking up plus is really cheap right now.
