Is internet needed for GT5P

Sup guys, I tried searching the forums but didn't find anything. My problem is that in order for me to play GT5P, I have to be signed in to PSN before I can start the game. Once I'm in, the connection can fail but I'll still be able to play the game. My GT5P was off the PSN and not disk based. If yours is disk based, do you have the same annoyance, and is there something I can do to circumvent the sign in requirement?

Its like that on the PSN version and only on the PSN version.
Its some kind of copy protection thing i believe.

Oh that some serious bull....if it's for copy protection then there's nothing I can do now...thanks for the response.
