Is it even possible to get GT5 working now from a fresh install?

I have just upgraded my PS3 with an SSD.

I backed up all my saved game data including my GT5 saved game.

Using my original copy of GT5 I have tried and tried to end up with a working installation and failed.

Basically, the disk version is version 1, but on starting for the first time it wants to go to v2.07. It downloads and applies 25 patches to do this. (Why don't they have delta patches?)

It either gets stuck here at the very end of the patching process, and just stops without any error, or it gets past that and then offers to do the 8gb install. If you accept that, it hangs at the end of the install. if you start the whole process from scratch and skip to the main menu, not installing the 8gb of stuff, if you click home and go into career mode, it just stops on the gt loading screen with the 'installing' message in the bottom right.

I have tried the following:

1. Completely reformatting the disk and reinstalling.
2. Started up the PS3 with the diagnostic boot menu and selected 'rebuild database' and reformatted and reinstalled.
3. Reverted to the original hard disk and reinstalled.
4. Disconnecting from the internet to skip the update and going to the main menu.

All with the same results.

Crazy.

F1 2010, GTi Club etc, all install and work fine.

The disk looks in pretty good condition.

Starting to get worried GT6 isn't going to work come release day...

Maybe it needs the disc install from the game options menu before updating to the latest version. Press the circle button to skip the update when you start the game I think. I'm not sure, though.

Ok, I'll give that a go. Cheers

I've done this a few days ago. ofcourse its still possible. How is this even a question? Do your really think there can be no more new users coming to gt5 ever from now on?

What i did was log into PSN, put in the gt5 disc, with no game or save data for gt5 in the ps3. Let the updates roll thru, Decline the install after the updates, then let the game go into the main menu. Log into psn etc. then quit the game and replace the new save file with your backed up old save file. Worked perfectly.

If only it was so simple. If you read my post, you will know the reality is somewhat different for me. A Google search reveals that I'm not alone with this problem. Some people have never solved it and had to go and get another PS3.

I have tried exactly what you describe here. That didn't work either - game gets to the main menu and then you select the home/career mode button and you end up on the GT 'loading' screen with 'Installing' at the bottom right and then it basically stays like that for hours with no disk activity whatsoever.

Oh for the days of the PS1/2 with no installs...

So on install the game goes to 2.07... can you stop it before the other released patches for hybrids? Since GT5 is coming to an end I've been considering a rollback on GT5.

The only thing I've encountered that's similar to this I eventually tracked down to a dirty game disc, if you can believe that. I used all the PS3 tools to rebuild my entire system, etc and it carried on falling over on the install of updates. Quite why it was falling over installing updates, I don't know. Maybe it was trying to address something on the disc whilst installing the updates?

Anyway, I huffed on the disc a few times, and buffed off the greasy fingerprints and unbelievably that darn thing installed cleanly...

{Cy}

PS - I prepared to accept that this was a psychosomatic thing...

I will give that a go. The disk looks ok, a very minor scratch or two...

Edit: just tried thoroughly cleaning the disk. Made no difference. I have now bought another copy off eBay. If that doesn't work it's a new ps3 I think.

Update.

I got it working in the end.

The answer to anyone struggling with the same problem? It was the blu-ray.

I bought a used platinum edition off eBay, put the disk in with the network cable unplugged, and bam, it works.

What is interesting is that despite what has been reported on the forum before, the platinum version IS a different version to the original GT5 disk.

I am not sure of he exact version, but as soon as you put the disk in it states that it needs to install a 192mb partition of data on the hard disk before it runs for the first time. The original version never did that.
