Ahh...after almost a week of tweaking and configuring, and reinstalling, and reinstalling, and rein..... I finally got VMWare to work. And now, I feel compelled to post the coolest screenie EVER.

Now, only to get that Samba server working so Wndows can see the Linux files! (Any ideas on how to do that?)

Sorry, after re reading it my original post doesn't look like it makes that much sense. The outside window is Linux, my OS. And there is an application running called VMWare, that runs a whole windows xp install "within" Linux. Its a "virtual machine" and thats where the VM comes from. There is a virtual hard dirve, virtual memory, even a virtual BIOS.

I thought you were going to say you were running Lindows.

How well does that run? It seems like it would be very sluggish seeing as how you would have two operating systems loaded simultaneously.

Surprisingly, it dose'nt really chew up much processor (or any more than windows would normally). But it really thrashes my HD whenever I try to do anything that requires disk access in XP. And it eats up 100% of my 512 MB ram. Otherwise, I can leave it running and I dont even notice it on my Linux apps. I even was installing Vice City on XP while at the same time I ran a PSX emulator in linux.

DAMN that's cool

i use Linux red hat 8 and i have the samba thing and i have the same prob w/ the windows computers on my network not being able to see the files on the Linux comp, but i got no time to play around w/ that **** i just transfer the files to the xp comps from the linux comp if i need the them.........

For a while there I dual booted win2k and red hat. I didn't have any problem mounting the win2k partition in linux, but I never managed to go the other way around. I think there may not be a way.

I just ended up creating a windows partition that I then mounted on linux. That way I could see the partition with both OS's.

Good luck. The VMware thing is interesting but I think I'd prefer the dual boot myself. I'm sure you haven't had any luck getting any hardware intensive programs to work under VMware.

Yeah, I just set it up so that when teachers assume that you can run windows programs, I'm not left in the dark. That, and just for the novelty value. (also my roommate uses it for iTunes, he also uses linux, SuSe).
