is it worth getting the steering wheel?

No You Can Do pretty well with the control if you practice

I was just reading at ps2.ign.com that there is a bad bug with the $100 wheel and GT3 that has just turned up.  It seems the wheel will stop functioning after so long.  There is no good fix for it right now either.

the gtforce wheel is great........it adds to the driving experience.........i dont know how many of you drive your car to work everyday with a joystick ......you can't really call the motor problem with the wheel a bug.....if the motor works to hard it blows...thats it.....i'm pretty sure most of us can fix the little electric motor ourselves....
