Is manji an "acceptable" way to link two corners?

Well, first of all: I don't know every term for this, so my searches didn't come up with what I was looking for... (or I'm blind, but who knows?) As usual, please point out my shortcomings if I've overlooked an existing thread ;)

Lately I've been asking myself this: would you consider fishtailing (I hope that's what manji is, or I just made a fool of myself :scared: ) a short straight as linking the two ends? I've gone a bit link crazy as of late, and I'm unsure whether I like this technique or not, and whether it's a "legit" way of linking different parts of a track or just cheap...

The reason for all this is that I have some pretty long sections that I want to film that are pretty doable using this technique, but extremely hard or impossible to do in sweeps (deep forest turn 2 and through the "dip", apricot hill turn 1 through to the back straight and even past the hairpin, all of autumn ring mini reverse etc...)

i don't call it linking... per se. It doesnt imply to me what I consider linking to be.
I think 'connecting' is a more appropriate term. But that's just my take, I'm not trying to change peoples' terminology.

I have no troubles with it if it maintains an established rhythm between 2 sets of corners. But I draw the line when someone drifts a super long straight in this manner. I don't see the point in this.

As a guideline for myself, I don't do it where it requires more than 2 or 3 'sways' to get from one corner to the next (2 if they are of opposite direction, 3 if the turns are in the same direction). The fewer sways, the better.
For instance, at SSR5 I connect the first 11 turns like this (turn one being the long tunnel, not the kink before it). I have to do 2 sways from 4 to 5, 1 large one or 3 short ones from 6 to 7, and 1 sway from 8 to 9. I wouldnt consider connecting turns 11 and 12 though, it's too long of a stretch.
Similarly, the last 3 turns of DF are often connected this way.

I find nothing wrong with it as long as you keep a rhythm.

That's pretty much where I'm at as well. 1 or 2 bonus swings would be enough to do the links I want to do, so I guess I'll start workin out them lines ;)

DF bugs me though, do you manji the first tunnel or the uphill left after the second tunnel? I can't sweep those for the life of me.. well the uphill left is possible, but at a ridiculously low angle :(

ya, i can't sweep through turns 5 and 6 at DF - to hard to maintain the required speed in the cars i drift. Gotta give it one sway in the tunnel.

Same with the last 3 turns. You can link that left into the left hand kink, but I think in this case it does look more impressive with the manji-ing. It gets you into a rhythm that you can take into the final turn, and you can execute the entire section with more angle.

I did get the kink into the final left at DF in one swoop once, but it was purely accidental, and it involved a lot of grass ;)But it IS possible... and I keep trying lol.. I guess you need a ridiculous AWD machine of some sort to pull that off on purpose.

I never really drifted past the first hairpin-ish turn at SS5, but 11 turns in one link sounds tempting.... (Hmm now I just got this idea for a short video series or even compo with various drifters showing off or competing with their longest captured link lol... hmm Swift are you there? :dopey: )

normally i dont do it for more than one or two sways, i find it rather annoying. I like to just drive normally on a straight to setup my next string of drifts.

manji is definately an exceptable technique to link corners. it is used in professional competition in order to maintain a loss of traction and/or make your drift seem longer, smokier, and more skillful. there is no other technique to link turns other than manji. if you are spinning your tires going straight you get no points.

Manji is when you are swaying back and forth on a straight, it is not the linking of corners. Most pro courses do not have any manjiing, since, most pro's are going for max speed entry.

well....it's not like if you link a corner before and after a straight like that we'll be like "OMFG HOW THE *** DID YOU DO THAT, YOU GOT LIKE AWSOME SKILLZZZZZ!"

PS. I typed the ***, dont worry, it aint the swear filter:P

Well, I guess I'll learn how to do 360s without losing speed instead... I tried doing some manji "links" and it just didn't look good to me in the replays with more than one sway.

I guess it's time to learn to know the handbrake-induced four wheel slide better ;)
