Is this normal?

I recently got GT5 XL version and I installed it on my PS3. The install started with 14 updates and stalled out with an error code at 4 updates in. I restarted the machine and saw that there were only 10 updates left to go.
The game installed fine after that but when I went to the dealerships there were hardly any cars. For instance there is only one car available in Acura. Is this how the game is supposed to be or do I need to erase it all from the hard drive and start over again. If that has to happen its no big deal as I'm not that far into it yet.

You must be new here.

GT5 contains 265 or so Premium cars, these are the only cars available to buy in the dealerships (NCD), while the over 800 standard cars are the only cars available to buy in the Used Car Dealership (UCD). This is how they separate the cars in the game, Standard (PS2 level of quality cars) and Premium (Fully modeled and extremely detailed machines).

The Premium dealerships contains few cars in comparison to the rest of the car list as 20% or so of the car list are premium cars, with the rest as standard cars.

GT6 does away with this separation by having all cars in a single universal dealership, containing the 412 premium cars alongside the 790 or so GT4 cars (Of which some have been improved massively and are near premium status).

Yes, that's normal. Only premium models are in the dealership, the rest end up in the random used car dealership

Ok, that's all I was looking to find out. That saves me starting over again. I gather it takes a good bit of time to accumulate the vast number of vehicles in the game then. Is there any way to search for specific vehicle or is it just the luck of the draw?

All 200+ Premium cars are there from the start. While the UCD has a random cycle of 30 Standard cars every 2 days or so.

Make sure you do some of the Seasonal Events before the servers close in May. Otherwise, it's gonna take a while to get some cars.

Just luck of the draw, but there's a calculator somewhere...

Unfortunately it seems like that site is down. It used to be at gt5cars.net

Edit: @Milouse Is there something similar at mygranturismo.net?

Edit 2: This seems to be an Excel file with Used Car Dealership cars, last updated about a year ago. I haven't tried it, but it might be worth looking into:

Yes.

Get a good race car capable of 650PP, and race A-Spec #4, 3rd race for CR1,000,000 a win with the 200%. Withe the Mazda 787B, it's a cool CR1,000,000 in six minutes.

I recorded one on my races, "warts and all" a few days ago:

You can completely refresh the list of cars in the UCD by:
1 entering the license test section
2 enter in one license (for example B)
3 go to the first test and enter it
4 after the test is loaded, don't do it and go to the next test
5 repeat point 4 until you get to test number 5
6 exit and return to the main menu

the entire process takes 5-10 min (don't remember exaclty)
then you go in the UCD and all the cars will be changed

One race gives you 6 new cars

One race is one day

So the easiest/best way to go is to do 3-4 seasonalraces. If you have the 200% loginbonus, it will be easy to make a lot of cash to get some cars and still have some cash left to tune/paint them :-)

@matthew1979 If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason why you got GT5 instead of GT6? Not that it was a bad decision, it's just that one is 3 years older.

While it can take a while buying cars as the UCD is tiresome, if you are willing to go through the tedium of the licence test refresh method, you will be surprised how quickly you can accumulate cars, especially if doing the seasonal races (I do the Nascar one at Monza with it power limited to 580PP which pays just over 3 million credits for just under 15 minutes). I have been playing GT5 alongside GT6, playing a couple hours a day for the last 6 weeks or so and have managed to buy over 750 cars
