Is this too big for a PS3 Harddrive?

Wow I just got the exact same hdd yesterday. It works perfectly well worth the upgrade

Alright then. Its surprising though. I just realized the external doesn't need much space because you only NEED to back up the saved data as everything else can be reinstalled on the PS3. (Also helps when you forget your new partitioned HD cannot support FAT32 :ouch:.)

Tom
I believe that the PS3 supports up to 500GB.

Not true. It can support up to 750 GB with little trouble. The 1 TB hdd can not be supported because of a design flaw in the PS3 itself. 500 and 750 GB is .4" while 1 TB is tad bit taller(9.5 mm or .5") depending on the brand.

Yes, there are some 1 TB SATA hdd that will fit in the tray , but those use a different standard SATA(like USB and USB 2.0) and it may not be compatible with the PS3.

Hope this information helps.

It's either too big or it not. If it's a 2.5" drive, it'll fit the PS3.

When I said too big I meant the HD capacity and the RPM. I actually look and now I realize I forgot to mention it is a 2.5 Inch SATA.

As far as capacity, that one should be fine. I have a Western Digital 640GB 7200RPM one in mine.

Technically what I said is true. If it's a 2.5" drive, it'll fit the PS3's drive bracket and its corresponding slot. He didn't specify whether he was referring to big as in physical size or storage capacity and I didn't read the replies, so I commented based solely on physical size.

His point was confusing but he meant that the larger capacity HDD was too thick. The 1TB was 12.5mm thick and the smaller 750GB HDD was 9.5mm thick. This 1TB HDD is 9.5mm thick.

I just re-read the OP and the replies and it sounds as if he's concerned about the storage capacity of the drive, not its physical size.

Yes. I was fairly sure that 2.5" SATA was required but I wasn't sure if there was either a RPM limitation and/or a GB limitation on the PS3 itself. This is the fat PS3 (last one with backwards compatibility).

Well 1TB's have been used on a PS3 before any 9.5mm thick 2.5" ones were made. Just with a sata cable connected to an external. They can easily use the 1TB since the FAT32 format does allow for a 1TB drive.

That's my point exactly. When I installed my, admittedly, 500 GB HDD two years ago, the technology didn't exist then to shrink the 2.5" 1TB disks so that they would fit in a PS3. They were 12.5 mm thick. Try putting one of them in the PS3, and you would not even get the clearance necessary to put it back together. So I have scrapped the whole idea of putting in a TB HDD in there.

It is time to reconsider putting one in there now since they are getting smaller.

Do you guys have any links to the HD thats you're upgrading to or have upgraded to. My kids 80gb is full, time to hook them up.

If you want a 1TB drive then you can use this one. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that it needs to be a Sata Laptop Drive(2.5") and 9.5mm thick when you are looking for a HDD.

That's the one I'm using. Works fine.

Some people have a few terribyte drives.

Indeed. I have a friend that has a 2TB HDD for his PS3.

There is no limit to how large the capacity of a HDD can be for any PS3. In fact, many people use a simple SATA extender cable so that they are not limited to only SATA drives that can fit inside their PS3. Not only does a SATA extender allow for much larger drives, but faster and cheaper drives as well. The only downside is that you will have an external HDD, but all the upside more than makes up for it.

Just keep in mind, the bigger the HDD and the more data you keep on it, the longer it will take to make backups... like several hours for a 2TB drive.

1TB is the biggest internal HDD?
