Oh man, brings back some scary memories of the biggest bandwaggoning even in recent history. Anyone with the slightest amount of Italian in their blood suddenly felt compelled to be some sort of megapatriots from their homeland.

There's a barbershop across from the bank owned by an "Italian" guy. He has put up a huge poster of the Italian National team on his front window so nobody could miss it, so I go inside to get a hair cut, I see that he's posted a map of the country next to a mirror and I ask him :
"Ohh so you're Italian!"
- He goes: "Well, I'm half Irish, I got some Russian and some Italian" ....
I say : Ohh OK, do you speak any Italian?
- "Nope"
"So what do you think about the team's performance in the WC?"
- "I only saw the second half of the final"

"................................................Ahhh, I see....., right."

I watched the WC final in an Italian restaurant with some Italian friends, and it was an amazing atmosphere - and, of course, the place went wild after the game. Even in the streets of North London there were cars tooting their horns and Italian flags being waved from car windows everywhere...

(However, I must admit, looking back I now realise that I was so caught up in the atmosphere of it all that I didn't really give France the credit they deserved at the time... there is now no doubt in my mind that they were by far the better team on the night, and that Italy were very lucky to be crowned World Champions after what was essentially a poor performance after being out-played for most of the match)

*As an amusing aside, my best mate's girlfriend works for a major book publishing company here in London and they had to recall thousands of copies of a football encyclopedia they published recently because they had the 2006 World Cup Winners listed as France by mistake
