iTunes hangs while Backing Up

Hi guys,

Just a quickie. I've been trying to connect an iPhone to iTunes for over 3 hours now, all to put a few Christmas songs on before tomorrow. (It's now 10pm Christmas Eve) I am having some real issues with iTunes and, to be honest if there was ever a time to throw the laptop or iPhone at the wall, now would be it.

It all started when I first loaded it up and it said to update iTunes, okie dokie clicked yes and it continued its business. Then it closed during the backup to finish the update. I reloaded it up a bit later to try and continue and the phone didn't come up. I restarted the computer and then the iPhone before it finally appeared. I say by this stage I was already pretty frustrated but had no idea what troubles I would run into next.

Now the real problem, when I loaded iTunes again, the iPhone came up and it started the sync/backup as usual. However it said "Syncing" up the top of the screen for a good few minutes before "Backing Up" with the diagonal black/silver bars. I restarted several times and eventually left it for around half an hour and it appeared to be getting nowhere. If I tried to cancel this sync/backup iTunes would lock up. What's more I dragged the new songs twice since they didn't appear the first time, and now it says they are all going to be put on twice. Is there any way to cancel this action of putting all these songs on as it doesn't appear to be working.

I will try reinstalling iTunes but has anyone else experienced a similar problem or can provide a solution tonight? It would be much appreciated.

I know its only early Christmas Eve for many of you but I wish you all a Merry Christmas for tomorrow also. :)

EDIT: I think I may have fixed it, but the files to be copied (in grey) are still there. Is there any way to get rid of them without going through one by one. I don't think their going to copy automatically now.

Ok, I have the songs I want now (fingers crossed) but the backup still hangs and it locks up when I try to cancel it. I guess I'll have to restore the phone (which I would really like to be able to backup beforehand).

This wasn't my iPhone but I think iTunes's instability and frustration makes the purchase of any iDevice not worth it. :grumpy:
